It’s disappointing—but not surprising—to see some of the misinformation circulating about Ontario’s proposed optometry scope expansion.
Recent statements from certain ophthalmology groups urge the province to block these changes, but their messaging leaves out some key facts:
👁️ Optometrists are already highly trained in diagnosing and managing eye disease.
🩺 Scope expansion doesn’t replace ophthalmology—it helps reduce wait times and improves access to care, especially in rural and underserved communities.
⏱️ Patients deserve timely treatment, not months-long delays for conditions optometrists are fully qualified to manage with additional certification.
📉 The current system isn’t sustainable, and resisting modernization only hurts patients.
When misinformation spreads, it slows progress and fuels confusion. The voices pushing against scope expansion do not reflect the reality of patient care in Ontario—or the evidence-based model already working effectively across other provinces and U.S. states.
If you want a clear, fact-based breakdown of what these changes actually mean, please take a moment to read Dr. Prosia’s excellent post.

Patients deserve better access, better options, and a modernized eye-care system.
