🦴 Osteoporosis: The Silent Bone Disease We Need to Take Seriously
Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become weaker due to low bone mass and changes in bone structure. This leads to fragile bones and a higher risk of fractures—most commonly at the hip, spine, and wrist. Many people don’t realize that osteoporosis is present until a fracture occurs, which is why it’s often called a silent disease.
Why does this matter?
⚠️ Osteoporotic fractures can be life-changing.
Hip fractures carry a ~24% one-year mortality rate and often result in permanent loss of mobility and independence. Only 40–60% of patients regain their pre-fracture level of function.
Vertebral (spine) fractures—the most common type—increase the risk of future fractures fivefold and are associated with higher mortality.
Fractures can lead to chronic pain, disability, loss of independence, and reduced quality of life.
📊 Early detection is critical.

✅ The good news: osteoporosis is treatable and fractures are preventable.

Did you know that about 50–80% of people diagnosed with a concussion—also known as a mild traumatic brain injury—also have whiplash? Orthopaedic Sport Institute
This commonly happens after:
🚗 Motor vehicle collisions
🤕 Falls
🏒 Sports injuries involving sudden acceleration–deceleration forces
And it’s not just young athletes.
Older adults are just as affected by concussion, often after falls or car accidents—and their recovery can be even more complex.
These injuries often occur together, and if one is missed, recovery can be delayed.
Dr. McCrimmon will explain how both concussion and whiplash are treated—and why addressing the neck is a critical part of brain recovery.
🧠 Don’t ignore your brain.
Your recovery depends on treating the whole injury.

We were treated to a very special visit from one of our amazing patients 💛
She discovered art as a hobby and chose bright, joyful colours to create beautiful paintings. We are so grateful that she shared her talent with us and left a few pieces from her collection to brighten our space.
Moments like this remind us how creativity, healing, and kindness are so deeply connected. Thank you for trusting us and for sharing a piece of your heart with all of us 🎨✨

🌿 Finding Strength at My Own Pace
Freda’s story- I was worried about osteoporosis and broken bones. My doctor told me exercise could help strengthen my bones — but I didn’t know what to do or how to exercise safely.
Then I met Alta, who is Bone Fit certified Kinesiologist. Over the past few years, she changed my life.
With one-on-one exercise, we move at my pace. The exercises are safe, gentle, and focused on what matters to me — getting up from a chair, walking steadily, and feeling stronger every day.
Now my bone density has improved. I’m stronger, my balance is better, and I feel more confident moving without fear.
I’ve learned that getting older doesn’t mean giving up — it means having the right support.

Walking on ice is not easy ❄️
One of the simplest ways to avoid a fall (and a fracture) is to walk like a penguin 🐧:
✔️ Take small, slow steps
✔️ Keep your feet slightly turned out
✔️ Keep your center of gravity over your front leg
✔️ Hands out of pockets for balance
✔️ Wear footwear with good traction
A little adjustment in how you walk can make a big difference this winter.
Friendly tip from your orthopaedic surgeon next door — stay upright, stay safe. 🦴❄️

Medication & Supplement Awareness Orthopaedic Sport Institute
Did you know that certain medications may affect how your body uses key nutrients?
Here are a few general points to discuss with your healthcare provider:

💊 Statins (for cholesterol):
Some people ask about Co-enzyme Q10 and whether it may help with muscle symptoms.

💊 Metformin (for diabetes):
Long-term use can sometimes affect vitamin B12 levels, so checking levels may be helpful.

💊 Calcium + Vitamin D:
These nutrients work as a team, and some patients also ask about the role of Vitamin K2.
⚠️ Important: Vitamin K2 is not appropriate for people taking blood thinners like warfarin or Coumadin, so always check first.

Always talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or healthcare team before starting any supplement—your individual health situation matters.
