Happy April
As we move into the original New Year and Spring Equinox with the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical
Spiritual Practices: Awakening & Renewal
Spring = Reconnection with Spirit and Earth
Water Ceremonies
As ice melted, women especially honored the waters (lakes, rivers, streams).
Water is seen as a living spirit—this was a time to sing to the water, offer to***co, and practice balance.
Spring Fasting & Visioning
Some individuals fasted at this time to gain clarity, direction, or spiritual guidance for the coming cycle.
Sacred Fire & Offerings
Fires were lit to mark transition.
Offerings (to***co, food, songs) were given back to the land in gratitude.
This was also a time when the nature Spirits were honored, like the Memegwesi and Sabe.
Honouring the Spirit of Renewal
This season reflects teachings of rebirth, forgiveness, and starting again—letting go of the heaviness of winter.
🧠 2. Mental Practices: Clarity & Planning
This was a time of intention-setting
Seasonal Planning
Families and communities discussed:
Where to travel
When to plant
What to harvest
Knowledge keepers guided based on natural signs, not calendars.
Learning from the Land
Observing:
Animal movements
Ice breakup
Bird returns
→ This was ecological intelligence, passed down orally.
Storytelling
As winter storytelling season closed, teachings were integrated into action.
❤️ 3. Emotional Practices: Reconnection & Community
Coming out of winter isolation
Gathering Again
After long winter months, people reconnected socially and ceremonially.
Laughter, visiting, and rebuilding bonds were essential.
Releasing Emotional Weight
Winter could be heavy—this was a time to emotionally cleanse and renew relationships.
Gratitude Practices
Giving thanks for surviving winter and welcoming new life.
🌿 4. Physical Practices: Movement, Medicine & Food
This is where life becomes very active again
🌳 Maple Sugar Season (Early Spring Highlight)
One of the most significant seasonal activities.
Sap flowing = first gift of the new year.
Families moved to sugar bush camps to:
Tap trees
Boil sap
Gather together
This wasn’t just food—it was ceremony, economy, and community.
🌱 Early Spring Foraging & Medicine
As snow melted, the first medicines appeared:
Cedar, sage, sweetgrass gathering (depending on region)
Early greens:
Dandelion
Nettles
Wild onions
These were used to:
Cleanse the body after winter
Support liver, digestion, and circulation
🐟 Spring Fishing Season Begins
As ice broke, fishing resumed.
Fish were a vital early protein after winter scarcity.
🛶 Travel & Movement
Canoe travel reopened as waterways thawed.
Movement between territories and gathering places resumed.
🌎 5. Seasonal Teaching: The True New Year
For many Anishnaabe teachings:
Spring Equinox and thaw = New Year
Not January 1st
This reflects:
Life returning
Earth breathing again
Responsibility beginning again
🌟 The Deeper Teaching of This Time
This season teaches:
Balance (after winter stillness comes movement)
Reciprocity (give back when you receive)
Awareness (watch the land, not the clock)
Renewal (you are allowed to begin again)
