There is no ideal shoe. Take some time to explore different options and find what is best for you.

Some recommended brands to consider would be: New Balance, Asics, Saucony, Hoka, Brooks. Don’t be shy and feel the need to stick with “Men's” or “Women's” shoes. The difference between the two are often 1.5 sizes (For example, Men’s 7 = Women’s 8.5). This can widen your horizon, especially when looking for specific features.

You’re also not alone in this process. If you ever have questions about finding the right footwear for you, speak with your chiropodist!

Running shoes and athletic footwear often provide the best support for your feet, but occupational demands, environmental constraints, and social factors can require different types of footwear. To ensure that your shoe is providing support regardless, it’s recommended to look for these three features when purchasing shoes!

These are only a few of the more popular options available to treat warts in Ontario. There are many home remedies, over-the-counter options that are similar to the treatments noted here, and other treatment options with chiropodists/dermatologists/family doctors not listed. The best management plan is one that is discussed and agreed upon with the patient and practitioner, as each option is associated with different risks and benefits.

Not all practitioners provide all options, but referrals are always available if initial treatment outcomes aren’t successful!

Remember to launder any clothing or bedding that frequently makes contact with a wart, and keep the wart covered with a Band-Aid to prevent infection of other parts of the foot or to others.

To avoid a plantar wart altogether, wear flip flops or slippers in any common-shared spaces. Keep feet dry and assess for any cracks or irregular marks on the feet weekly (at minimum). Moisturize daily to improve skin health.

Speak with your chiropodist for more information.

Keeping up with foot hygiene is a great way to prevent any infection from occurring! Washing feet daily, keeping it dry, changing socks frequently and disinfecting shoes are a good way to get rid of any fungal particles before they enter the skin. Inspecting the feet weekly (at minimum) is also another way to detect any changes as early as possible.

There are other at-home remedies or over-the-counter options available for fungal infections of the skin. Please speak with your chiropodist or family doctor before using them, to ensure that they will be effective for you and your feet.

Very common, and nothing to be ashamed of. Some things to note about treatment options:

Medications applied onto fungal nails can be a little on the expensive side. These treatments often take a minimum of 3 months and up to one year (on average!) of patience and daily application.

Oral medications are not advised for those with liver dysfunction. They do require monthly blood tests and are used for three months.

Alternative treatments like tea tree oil can be used, but their level of effectiveness has not been scientifically proven to the same extent as other medications.

Laser therapy for fungal nail treatment helps improve the APPEARANCE of the nail and has not been proven to cure the fungal infection.

False-nail applications, such as Keryflex, are a good option to improve appearance of the nail ONCE the infection has resolved – but keep in mind that pockets of space existing between the false nail and actual nail, or false nail and the nail bed, can harbour more pathogens and encourage recurrence of a fungal infection.

Corns often have a cone-like appearance with the point poking into the skin. This is why corns can feel uncomfortable or painful to step on! Some corns are smaller and flat, so can go unnoticed.

Because they’re often painful, chiropodists can remove them using a scalpel to relieve the pressure they place on your skin! They might break through skin below, and cause some bleeding as well. Chemicals can be used to try and slow down the regrowth of the corn, or a skin softener can be used in the area to try and prevent the corn from growing back. Because the way corns are formed are different from the way calluses are formed, you should speak with your chiropodist to see how to slow down their growth or get rid of them altogether. Routine care to remove the corns are recommended until they (hopefully) disappear!

Speak to your chiropodist or dermatologist for more information.

Callused skin are areas of thickened skin that look larger and more yellow compared to the rest of your feet. They can be found anywhere on the foot.

Callus is formed when there's increased, abnormal pressure, against the skin. This is the body's way of trying to protect the area, so that the skin does not breakdown easily.

While the callus tries to provide protection, the thickened skin itself can add to the abnormal pressure. This can result in breakdown of the skin, but in deeper layers under the callus, where we might see dried blood. This can be painful or can lead to a bigger wound, which is why we need to remove any pressure.

Visit your chiropodist to remove callus and speak with them for more information!

Being diagnosed with diabetes can take a large toll on an individual, both mentally and physically. Being equipped with information is helpful!

Diabetes affects the feet A LOT. The largest thing chiropodists keep an eye out for are wounds that can become infected. Getting annual assessments done of the feet with your chiropodist will create a baseline of your foot health and monitor any changes!

Contact your chiropodist, endocrinologist, or family doctor for more information.
