Christmas Magic at SpeechEase

It’s no secret… Christmas is our owner Sarah’s favourite time of year! From twinkly lights to cozy family traditions, this season is all about connection, joy, and belonging. We’d love to know — what are some of your family’s favourite holiday traditions?

Adapting traditions to be inclusive:
• Keep sensory needs in mind (gentle lights, quieter gatherings, cozy corners for breaks).
• Create flexible routines — sometimes skipping the lineup to see Santa is the best gift.
• Use visual schedules or social stories to prepare for big days.
• Remember: it’s okay to celebrate your way.

Gift ideas that support play, connection & learning:

• Sensory toys: kinetic sand, Play-Doh, fidgets, water beads.
• Games for flexible thinking & turn-taking: Connect 4, Guess Who, board games with simple rules.
• Creative outlets: LEGO, art kits, music toys.
• Special interests: Don’t forget to add items that match your child’s passions — it’s the best way to show you see them!

SLP vs SLPa - What’s the Difference? 👩🏫💬

At SpeechEase Therapy Services, both our Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and SLP Assistants (SLPas) play important roles in helping clients reach their communication goals but their training and responsibilities are a little different.

Here’s what to know 👇

🎓 Education:
SLPs hold a Master’s degree in Communication Sciences & Disorders, while SLPas complete undergraduate-level training and work under SLP supervision.

💰 Rates:
SLPa sessions are typically offered at a lower rate, while SLP sessions are billed at the professional rate (often covered by insurance).

🗣️ Treatment:
The SLP assesses clients, creates treatment plans, and checks in after every 4 SLPa sessions to ensure progress and quality of care.

💡 Advice & Support:
SLPs handle problem-solving and updates to the treatment plan, while SLPas provide general feedback and day-to-day session support.

AAC is for everyone — and in BC, there are ways to access it. ⁠ Whether your child uses pictures, buttons, or a speech-generating device, AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) gives them a voice — and it’s never too early (or too late) to start.⁠ ⁠ 📍 In British Columbia: ✅ Children under 19 may qualify for AAC through Autism Funding, Variety BC, and other grants ✅ Adults 19+ can access support through CAYA (Communication Assistance for Youth and Adults) ✅ The SpeechEase team is here to help set up and support the best AAC system for you! ⁠ 🌟 **Common barriers like cost, waitlists, and lack of support are real — but there are strategies to work around them.**⁠ With the right funding, support network, and modeling strategies, AAC can open up a world of communication.⁠ ⁠ 🧠 MYTH BUSTER: Using AAC does NOT stop a child from speaking. Let’s talk about language — because words matter in speech therapy.
“Nonverbal” is a term we no longer use.
 Why? Because it:

* Implies absence of communication
* Centers what a person can’t do
* Misses the richness of non-speech communication

✅ We use “nonspeaking,” “minimally speaking”, “AAC user,” or “multimodal communicator.” These terms honor the full spectrum of communication — typing, signing, gesturing, scripting, AAC, and more.
Speech is not the only form of communication. Your voice matters, however it comes through. 💬💙

Let’s be clear: masking isn’t a milestone. It’s a survival response. Many neurodivergent people — especially autistic individuals — learn to hide their true selves in order to “fit in” or avoid punishment.
But masking comes at a cost: burnout, anxiety, loss of identity, and mental health struggles. As neurodivergent-affirming SLPs, we NEVER teach “normal” (whatever that means anyway?). We teach authenticity, consent, and self-trust.

Therapy should feel safe. Communication should feel free. You should never have to hide who you are to be supported.

✨ You are enough, unmasked.

Azam is a registered therapeutic counsellor with 14+ years of experience supporting individuals and families toward better mental health. With a background in psychiatry and extensive training in evidence-based approaches like CBT, DBT, Schema Therapy, and Family/Couple Therapy, Azam offers holistic, client-centered care.
