When you get your ICBC claim number, you have 12 weeks of pre-approved treatment coverage. But here's what most people don't realize:
Those 12 weeks start counting from the day of your accident. Not the day you get your claim number. Not the day you decide to book treatment.
If you crashed on January 1st and it's now January 20th, you have approximately 11 weeks left—not 12.
Why this timeline matters:
Research shows the first 2-4 weeks after a crash are when your body is most receptive to treatment. Soft tissue injuries, inflammation, and movement restrictions respond faster to targeted treatment in the acute phase. Early intervention prevents chronic pain from whiplash-associated disorders.
Wait six weeks and your body has already adapted to protecting the injured area. Treatment still works, but symptoms become more difficult to treat due to tissue changes and compensatory movement patterns.
How delays eat into your window:
📅Monday: You crash, get your claim number
📅Wednesday: "I'll just rest it out"
📅Friday: You realize your neck isn't okay, try to book physio—everything's booked for two weeks
📅Three weeks in: You finally get assessed
Now you have 9 weeks left. If you need 20 physio sessions (normal for moderate injuries) at once per week, that's 20 weeks total. You're covered for 9 of them.
The solution: Book your assessment in week 1. Even if you're not sure you need ongoing treatment, the assessment gives you real information about what you're dealing with.
Early assessment gives you choices. Later assessment means you're working against months of compensation patterns.
