Registered Massage Therapy in Courtenay BC

As a Registered Massage Therapist since 2015, my approach is attentive and sensitive to each client's particular needs. I have an interest in the meeting place of persistent pain conditions, trauma, mental health and general wellbeing. I believe that healing touch combined with the creation of a safe space that is inclusive and welcoming has a powerful role to play in our health. I have found that treatment need not be painful to be effective, and that longer lasting results come when promoting and enhancing the body's natural healing inclination. This often takes the form of a subtle approach with the goal of decreased pain and stress and an improvement in overall wellbeing. Treatments are customized to the individual, and clients’ needs are addressed through a variety of techniques intended to achieve long-term health - whether that means relief from pain, rehabilitation after an injury or surgery, nervous system support, or assisting lifestyle and exercise goals. Clients are provided with relevant self-care strategies in the form of strengthening, stretching and/or habitual changes to facilitate the road to health. I encourage my clients to play an active role in their recovery, as the most effective therapy is a team effort.

Fascinating!

Fascinating!

BMJ published a case, by Fisher and colleagues, in 1995 of a construction worker who had jumped onto a plank at his worksite and landed on a 7 inch nail. The nail pierced right through his boot. Understandably, the construction worker was in exquisite pain. He was taken to ER, and given opioids to treat the pain.

When the ER doctors removed the boot, they discovered something absolutely incredible. 😲 The nail had passed between his toes, and the worker was not injured at all!

🤔So why was he in so much pain?

The pain was ABSOLUTELY REAL and required opioids to reduce.

Here is what pain science tells us likely happened:
🧠 The construction worker’s brain took in the situation (the visual of the nail through his boot, knowledge of his work environment being dangerous, other people’s reactions) and made a guess that he should be in A LOT of pain. From all the information his brain had, it deduced he was in grave danger, and created a pain sensation to get him to protect his “injured” limb. 🧠

This famous case illustrates just how powerful our brains are in the production of the pain experience.

And it underlines why pain education and involving our minds in recovery from chronic pain is so important. 🙌

Pain science informed physiotherapists are aware that the brain plays an important role in chronic pain - and they use this knowledge to benefit their patients with chronic pain by helping to re-train the brain while rehabilitating the body.

Aaron Jones PT has a special interest in persistent pain care, and his personal experience of recovery from persistent pain illustrated to him how important it is to have a mind and body approach to chronic pain.

Dear Clients,

I will be relocating my practice as a RMT to Acacia Health - Westside in Vic West in February, 2021. It has been an honour to work with you during my time here at Westshore Massage Therapy and I have very much enjoyed getting to know you and support you on your healing journey.

My leaving is bittersweet. I have the utmost respect and appreciation for all of my colleagues here at Westshore and I will be leaving behind some fulfilling professional relationships. However, I am looking forward to a return to what I love best - multidisciplinary collaboration.

If you have any questions or would like support with a referral please don’t hesitate to be in touch!

Looking forward to seeing all of you again! I’ll be available from the second week of June onward.

Looking forward to seeing all of you again! I’ll be available from the second week of June onward.

Dear Westshore Massage Therapy Community,

We are delighted to announce that we will be re-opening the clinic gradually beginning June 1, 2020. Please be informed by the information provided below that the manner in which we conduct our practice will be very different than previously. In alliance with the Provincial Health Officer, The College of Massage Therapists of B.C. and WCB, we have implemented numerous changes in our clinic based on the required guidelines from these authorities. While we cannot be certain that these protocols will prevent the spread of Covid-19, they are designed to mitigate risk to you and our RMT’s while you access our services.

We are in the process of making a lot of changes to our schedule so you may not find any appointments available on-line in June for the next few weeks. Please e-mail us at westshoremassage@gmail.com to book in June.

We understand this will be a strange new way of operating, but we strongly feel that if we are proactive with our safety measures, we will decrease the risk for you and our team. We look forward to providing you with a safe and healing environment!

Yours in health,
The team @ Westshore Massage Therapy

RE-START PLAN CONDENSED VERSION

(We will be updating our website in the next week with a comprehensive description of our clinic's re-start plan.)

CLIENT SCREENING
Careful screening of all visitors that enter the clinic provides an extra level of safety to the clinic, it’s RMT’s, and clients. Be aware that practice will look and feel differently to clients. Clear communication before individuals enter the clinic will help clients understand the new process and what to expect at their visit. Our new booking procedure will include 3 mandatory pre-screenings for Covid-19 symptoms. Your RMT will collect screening information at time of booking, 24 hours prior to your appointment and again in person at the time of appointment when you first enter the treatment room. Your RMT will document that the screening was done and will refuse to treat if the client refuses to participate in any of the 3 screening processes or if the response to any 2 of the questions is yes. For more detailed information on this screening process please visit our website.

PHYSICAL DISTANCING
In an effort to maintain physical distancing within the clinic we are limiting the number of RMT’s and clients in the clinic at a given time. As a result, if you have an appointment already booked in June you may be asked to change this appointment to a different time and day. The door to the clinic will be locked at all times to effectively manage physical distancing efforts. Please wait outside of the clinic slightly prior to your appointment time and your RMT will let you in and walk you into your treatment room. After your treatment is over your RMT will walk you to the front door and unlock the door for you. Companions are not permitted inside the clinic with you except those that are providing you with physical assistance.
At this time, we will not be accepting bookings for minors.

ADMINISTRATIVE TASKS
We will not be using the reception/office area for taking payment or rebooking your appointment. This will be done in the treatment room by your RMT before or after your treatment. We request that payments be made by credit cards or Visa/Debit cards at this time and be kept on file in your account to avoid handling cards.

PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT (PPE)
The use of a mask is required to be worn for the duration of your visit as well as hand sanitzation upon entering and exiting the clinic. Our RMT’s will also be wearing a mask at all times. We ask that you arrive with your own mask however if you do not have one the clinic has a supply of disposable masks available for a fee.

SANITIZATION
We have implemented strict sanitization protocols for all areas in the clinic. High touch areas will be sanitized several times a day. The massage table, bench, pillows and high touch surfaces, in each treatment room will be sanitized between every client. All equipment that comes into contact with a client’s body will be sanitized between each use.

CANCELLATION
Our cancellation policy remains in place with leniency toward illness related circumstances. We will not charge anyone for a missed appointment or same day cancellation who suddenly comes down with symptoms of an illness or if a member of the family becomes ill. Please visit www.bc.thrive.health for the B.C. symptom self assessment tool.

Looking forward to seeing your friendly faces again! Stay safe and healthy folks, we’re getting closer to being able to reopen but we have to make sure our protocols are in place first. Big hugs to all!

Hello Westshore Massage Therapy Community!

The Premier announced yesterday that the closure mandate over Massage Therapy Clinics will be lifted sometime after May 19th. The message was somewhat vague as we have to wait for the College to get our new practice protocol guidelines approved by the PHO. We will then get a green light and out of an abundance of caution and care for your safety and ours, we will take the necessary time to correctly implement the new protocols and changes to the clinic without haste. Our hope is to re-open June 1st but we will update as soon as we have a definite date. We are all looking forward to seeing you very soon!
