The Functions of School Avoidance

School refusal affects 5–10% of youth and can be sorted into four specific functions. The first two functions involve negative reinforcement: avoiding bad feelings (like anxiety/depression) or escaping uncomfortable school situations (like social challenges). The other two functions are driven by positive reinforcement: seeking parents/caregivers attention (separation anxiety) or gaining tangible rewards at home (like electronics and sleeping in). Determining the function is crucial for an appropriate intervention.
