If you've ever thought "why did that upset me so much?" then this post might hit home for you.
When something "triggers" us, the reaction can feel sudden or confusing. A comment, tone of voice, situation, or even a smell can activate a strong emotional response.
This happens because the nervous system stores past experiences - especially stressful or painful ones.
When something in the present moment resembles those past experiences, the brain can react as if the old situation is happening again.
You may notice:
~ a surge of emotion (anger, fear, sadness)
~ shutting down or withdrawing
~ racing thoughts or feeling overwhelmed
~ your body becoming tense or anxious
These reactions are signs that your nervous system is trying to protect you based on what it learned in the past.
In therapy, we work to gently understand these responses. By bringing awareness and compassion to our triggers, we can begin to separate the past from the present.
Over time, the nervous system learns that the old wound no longer has to control today's reactions.
As always, reach out to us and we can help.
