You likely didn’t expect to feel like you were always irritable or yelling.  It never crossed your mind that the smallest things would set you off or ruin your day.  And because you didn’t expect any of the ugly feelings that have been coming up, you’re feeling a ton of shame.  Maybe you si...

Very helpful tips for anyone struggling to be able to wear masks in public.

Image description: An illustration of hands holding a fabric mask open. Text: "For some survivors, wearing a mask can trigger memories of abuse, such as the feeling of having a hand covering your mouth or your face pushed into a pillow. They can also make us feel claustrophobic which can trigger fears of having a panic attack or losing control of our breathing."

I have been thinking a lot about the phrase "Nova Scotia Strong" this evening, and realized I have mixed feelings about it's usage. I think the community spirit of togetherness and compassion that is behind the use of this phrase is uplifting. However, I hope people using it are careful that "Nova Scotia Strong" does not send the message to those who are hurting that those most affected need to be strong. I hope that anyone impacted by this tragedy knows that it is okay not to be strong in this time. It is okay not to feel strong when you have lost a loved one; it is okay not to feel strong when you are isolated; it is okay not to feel strong when you have lost your job or life's savings; it is okay not to feel strong in your unique circumstances right now. "Nova Scotia Strong" means that as a community we will provide support to those who are not strong right now.

Words cannot express the sorrow that I feel due to the tragedy that took place in our province this past weekend. At this time, many people are finding the need to reach out and talk to someone about how they are feeling. This is a particularly challenging time due to the isolation, joblessness, and financial stress that has resulted from Covid-19. For those who need immediate assistance, the province of Nova Scotia has a toll-free help line to call: 1-888-429-8167. I am currently working towards being able to provide virtual sessions, booked through Kinesis Health Associates, and will be updating you all when I have a schedule in place.
