We are excited to introduce our Indigenous Support Doula, Mimi, to our Otter Family 🦦 🤎

Boozhoo / Aniin

My name is Mimi! I am Anishinabae from Skownan First Nation. I am a mother of two, and through my lived experience and journey through motherhood, it has given me a deep passion for supporting and helping other mothers as they walk their own healing paths.

I enjoy beading, sewing, and creating with my hands. I also enjoy reading, writing and journaling, spending time on the land hiking and picking medicines and on the lakes paddle boarding. These are things that help keep me grounded and connected to culture.

I also practice holistic body work such as reiki, hot stone, and raindrop therapy, which I feel can help bring balance and healing to our mind, body, and spirit.

I am also an Indigenous support doula, or what I like to call a support auntie, walking alongside mothers during pregnancy and postpartum, offering encouragement, care, and support.

I believe every woman deserves compassion, patience, and a safe space to grow, heal, and rediscover her strength. Not only are they rediscovering themselves, but I am also growing and healing alongside them, and it is truly an honour to walk alongside them through their healing journeys.

I am always eager to learn, listen, and support in any way I can. I am grateful for the opportunity to help and walk alongside the women and families in our community.

Miigwetch - Thank you 🤎

Drug Alert: Winnipeg - Fri. March 6, 2026

A white, round counterfeit tablet with “TEC” markings was found to contain medetomidine and he**in.

Medetomidine is a veterinary tranquilizer currently found in the local drug supply. It is stronger than xylazine and is only approved for use on animals. It decreases a person’s heart rate.

Naloxone does not work on non-opioid substances such as medetomidine. You should still give naloxone in cases of overdose, since medetomidine samples usually contain opioids as well.

Sample was tested on February 13 by Health Canada Drug Analysis Services after it had been seized by law enforcement.

Miigwetch.

Did you know Jibstop North now runs a 7 week Relapse Prevention Program?

Our unique program was created by our director, Jasmine. A Metis woman from Winnipeg who just celebrated a decade of sobriety from m**h addiction. ❤️

Jasmine had to heal from some very painful trauma's in order to move forward with her life. She now uses her lived experience and education to provide programming for those wanting to do the same.

Jibstop North has been successfully providing services in First Nations communities for the past 3 years. Our goal is to help both youth and adults heal from generational trauma and break free from Addiction.

Program Outline below:

Unverified , June 30, 2025: Co***ne suspected to contain Fentanyl.

We have received a report from a community partner of unexpected reactions to co***ne that tested positive for fentanyl in the Sydney, Cape Breton area in Nova Scotia.

Drugs from the unregulated supply (“street” supply) are unpredictable – you don’t know what is in them and you don’t know how strong they are.

How to Stay Safe: Let someone know, start low, and go slow

✔ Let someone know – Use with someone you trust or call the National Overdose Response Service (NORS) at 1-888-688-NORS. They will stay on the phone with you while you use, so they can get you help if needed.
✔ Start with a very small amount – These drugs are stronger than what people may expect or be used to.
✔ Have naloxone ready – Naloxone can help with opioid overdoses, but it will NOT work on benzodiazepines or tranquilizers. Even if you're unsure what substance caused an overdose, always give naloxone—it won’t harm the person, but it may help if opioids are involved.
✔ Call 911 immediately for any overdose – Even if naloxone is used, emergency help is still needed.
✔ Check your drugs – Pills that look like real medicine could be fake and contain deadly drugs. Always assume street drugs are risky.
✔ Avoid mixing drugs – Combining opioids, benzodiazepines, and alcohol greatly increases the risk of overdose and death.
✔ Go to an overdose prevention site – If available in your area, these sites provide a safe space with medical staff who can help in case of an emergency.
Where to Get Help:

🏥 Overdose Prevention Sites (Supervised places where people can use drugs safely and get help if needed):
• ReFIX Halifax: 2151 Gottingen St. (902-209-9370)
• PeerSix Sydney: 75 Prince St. (902-567-1766)

🆘 If someone overdoses:
• Call 911 immediately – Tell them someone is unresponsive.
• Give naloxone if you have it. More than one dose may be needed if high potency opioids are involved. If there are no opioids, naloxone will be ineffective but will not cause harm – give it anyway.
• Stay with them and make sure they can breathe.
• If they stop breathing, perform rescue breaths until help arrives.

⚠️ If benzodiazepines or tranquilizers are involved, naloxone will NOT work (but will not cause harm if used) — emergency medical care is needed.

Get Free Naloxone Kits: You can get naloxone for free at most pharmacies and harm reduction programs.

Know Your Rights: Under the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act, you cannot be charged for drug possession if you call 911 to help someone overdosing. Do not be afraid to call for help.

📝 Submit a drug alert: If you come across suspicious drugs or someone has a bad reaction, you can report it to NSDrugAlert@nshealth.ca.
