Lets Talk Mental Health is a community created by Sabrina Cartwright and Bree Miller, two individuals whom have been handed the cards of mental illness. Right now it is a YouTube channel discussing all sorts of mental illnesses and tips and tricks on how to manage, as well as fun follow along activities for everyone. As well as a page dedicated to spreading positivity throughout the day. With new volunteer involvement and time and effort dedicated, lets talk mental health will hopefully become so much more than it is right now.
With Lets Talk Mental Health I hope to accomplish multiple things, with community support and involvement being one of them, fighting the stigma about mental health being another as well as eventually creating our own safe space for individuals to join and connect with one another.
What sort of topics do you discuss on the you tube channel?
We have been discussing all sorts of topics on the channel, such as depression, anxiety, ways to cope, and we also do small and fun activities such as ice breaker activities and poetry activities and fun get to know you activities. We recently did a glitter jar, which didn’t turn out so well but everything happens by trial and error.
What inspired you to start Lets Talk Mental Health?
I’ve gone through plenty of mental health struggles of my own in my life, feeling like I had nowhere to turn to. Yeah they’re was plenty of services out there but I’m the type of person that likes to take charge and do my own thing; which is why I started this whole thing. I had plenty of knowledge and experience when it comes to mental illness, plus I had taken social work in the past so I was educated on a lot of different conditions so I wanted to reach out and start something of my own from the ground up in hopes to reach out and inspire others to share their story so they don’t feel so alone.
Who can get involved with lets talk mental health?
Right now I have a wonderful team of twelve and plan on caping it at about 20-25 so it doesn’t become too overwhelming but mostly anyone can get involved as long as you’re willing to put in the work and help out as much as possible with the association and understand that it’s new so things will be rocky for awhile until we get settled and know more of what were doing. It’s hard when you have such a vision for something but know there's so many obstacles in your way you have to overcome, but everything starts from the ground up.
What does the page consist of?
So far the page consists of, photos, websites, resources and phone numbers, trying to update on it everyday and as consistently as possible with many different ideas from the other committee members.
When are your meeting days?
Lately they haven’t really been happening but in the near future I am hoping for at least twice a week generally Thursdays and Sundays but that all depends on everyone's availability and how everyone's feeling, because the number one rule is to put yourself first and if you can’t make a meeting due to depression its okay. But yeah, I’d like the meeting days to be Thursday from three - 5:30 and Sundays from 10 am until at least two or three ish depending on how long we need.
