Got tight, sore knots in your shoulders? Here's what's going on and how to find relief.


Those stubborn, sore lumps in your shoulders aren’t just random tension — they’re likely myofascial trigger points. These are hyperirritable spots within a taut band of muscle that can cause local pain or even refer discomfort to other areas.


What causes them?

Trigger points form when a muscle is overworked, injured, or held statically for too long.


Common culprits include:
🔥 Poor Posture – rounded shoulders from desk work or phone scrolling
🔥 Stress & Tension – unconsciously hunching or shrugging your shoulders
🔥 Repetitive Strain – from typing, driving, or lifting
🔥 Muscle Overload – using a muscle beyond its current capacity


The Posture Connection:
The key issue is holding muscles under constant tension. Rounded shoulders, for example, chronically stretch and weaken some muscles while others become short and tight. This imbalance creates the perfect environment for trigger points to form.

If you experience chronic lower back pain and find yourself having to sit for long periods of time, the following would be my top 3 poses for a daily practice to reduce pain and improve posture.

1 –Horse Pose - Bring yourself into a low lunge, with one knee on the floor behind you and the other foot planted in front of you with that knee bent. Try to keep your hips square as you press them forwards. Tilt your pelvis so that your tailbone is going down. You may rest your hands on your knee or raise your arms overhead. Repeat on the opposite side.

Benefit: Lengthens the deep hip flexors.

2 – Moon Pose - Standing with your feet hip width apart and hands resting on your head or with palms together over head, tilt your body to the side while lengthening your spine. Repeat on the opposite side.

Benefit: Increases core strength, length, and range of motion of the spine.

3 – Child's Pose - Kneel and sit on your feet, fold forwards and rest your head on your fists, hands, or the floor, alternatively rest your arms by your side or stretched forwards.

Benefit: Releases tension in the lower back.

These poses are fantastic by themselves, although a therapeutic massage targeting chronic lumbar pain can give relief very quickly and be maintained with the regular practice of these postures.

Always listen to your body and be gentle with yourself. ❤️
