How does trauma have an ongoing effect on one's ability to emotionally regulate?

When someone experiences trauma, their brain and nervous system can become dysregulated, disrupting their ability to manage emotions effectively. Trauma can alter the brain's structure and functioning, leading to changes in the areas responsible for emotional processing and regulation. As a result, the individual may experience ongoing heightened emotional responses, increased sensitivity to emotional triggers, and difficulties in returning to a baseline state of calmness.

There are various therapeutic approaches, such as Somatic Experiencing, that can help to re-regulate the nervous system and bring our bodies back to a state of health and wellness. We are grateful to offer these services at Dakova Health.

Practicing gratitude improves mental health by enhancing positive emotions, reducing stress, promoting resilience, and boosting our self-esteem. Gratitude triggers feelings of happiness and pleasure, fosters optimism, and contributes to a more positive outlook on life.

Incorporating gratitude into our daily routine can be as simple as keeping a gratitude journal, expressing thanks to others, or taking a moment each day to reflect on positive experiences.

How do you practice gratitude?

EMDR is an evidence-based therapy which is used to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences and distressing memories. This approach uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movement, sound or taps) to stimulate both sides of the brain while focusing on the traumatic event. The therapist will guide the clientโ€™s attention back and forth between the memory and the present moment, facilitating the processing and integration of the traumatic material. EMDR aims to reduce the emotional and physiological distress associated with trauma, and replace negative beliefs with more adaptive ones.

At Dakova Health, EMDR therapy is offered by our highly educated counselor, Peter Pederson. Contact us today to learn more and book your first EMDR session

What is mindfulness? And how can it benefit our mental health?

Mindfulness can be described as intentionally focusing one's attention on the present moment while utilizing a curious, open and non-judgemental attitude. It involves a deep awareness of your thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations and the surrounding environment, without getting caught up or "stuck" on anything.

Engagement in regular mindfulness practice shows various benefits for both physical and mental health -- including increased self-awareness, stress reduction and improved emotional regulation. Mindfulness practices can even improve focus and concentration, as it trains the mind to stay within the present moment.

And the best thing about mindfulness practice? The benefits are present whether you are practicing for a minute or an hour! Today, we challenge you to take a 5 minute break, close your eyes and practice mindfulness.

The symptoms listed above can easily be attributed to a lack of sleep or simply a โ€œbad dayโ€ โ€“ but have you ever considered that they may be the lingering effects of trauma? Traumatic experiences have sneaky ways of continuously impacting our minds and our bodies.

When we experience something traumatic, our sympathetic nervous system automatically kicks in and our bodies go into fight, flight or freeze mode. If this reaction doesnโ€™t complete itself, it can become โ€œstuckโ€, leaving us with persisting feelings of anxiety, stress or fatigue.

The good news is that there are counselling modalities, such as Somatic Experiencing, that can guide us through these incomplete reactions in order to rid us of excess energy and return our minds and bodies to a state of wellbeing. If you believe you or someone you love is struggling with unresolved symptoms of trauma, reach out today and let our team assist you on your journey to positive health and wellness.

Ending off the week with a lovely quote about vulnerability

Vulnerability is not weakness; it is our greatest measure of courage. When we let go of our attachment to the outcome of situations, we gain the freedom to live our lives more authentically.

What is National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD)?

NIPD is a day to reflect on both the historical and ongoing oppression that Indigenous people face within society. It is a day to acknowledge and educate ourselves further about traumas faced by Indigenous populations across our country. NIPD is also a day to celebrate the culture, diversity and contributions of Indigenous peoples. It is a day to commend the continuous strength and bravery of these populations.

The team at Dakova Health is honoured to be building safe relationships and collaborating with members of various First Nations communities to promote health and well-being across the country. We carry hope for a more inclusive and just future for all Indigenous peoples.
