Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association

Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association The Cowichan TRA (CTRA) exists as a place where the human-equine relationship creates opportunities

We have several program streams that are designed to meet the abilities, needs, and goals of individual participants. These program streams include: therapeutic riding (the physical therapy end of the spectrum), therapeutic horsemanship (therapy and skill-building through horsemanship “on the ground”), and equine assisted learning (team building and learning how to communicate effectively with both people and horses). Our program streams utilize the power of the human-equine bond to improve the lives of persons with varying needs who live within our community. A shared appreciation for this special human-equine relationship brings individuals and their families into our organization, where they experience inclusiveness and are given the opportunity to work collaboratively with everybody on their team. Although our program serves persons with disabilities, it has positively impacted the lives of countless individuals of all abilities. Our program serves as a hub of community action where members of our community give back through participation and volunteerism, with a culture of inclusion.

💙 A (Belated!) Thank You to Jane Stone 💙
We may be a little slow, but our gratitude is no less heartfelt! We would like to extend a sincere thank you to Jane Stone for hosting a fantastic Working Equitation clinic, with 100% of the proceeds generously donated back to CTRA.
The clinic was a wonderful opportunity for participants to learn, grow, and challenge themselves, all while supporting a cause close to our hearts. Jane’s time, expertise, and generosity make a real difference in helping us continue our programs and care for both our horses and our community.
Thank you, Jane, for your patience, your passion, and your incredible support of CTRA. We are so grateful to have you in our corner! 🐴✨

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Island Utility Construction for their generous support of CTRA. Their team recently came out and installed a settling bowl on our exterior drain and thoroughly cleaned the drainage line, just because they want to keep their employees busy and give back to the community.

These may seem like small things, but they make a big difference in keeping our facility safe, functional, and ready to welcome our riders, volunteers, and horses. Acts of generosity like this remind us just how fortunate we are to be supported by such a caring community.

Thank you, Island Utility Construction, for stepping in and supporting our work — we truly appreciate it. 💙

Our Story

We have several program streams that are designed to best meet the abilities, needs, and goals of individual participants. These program streams include: therapeutic riding (the physical therapy end of the spectrum), recreational riding (therapeutic riding with a focus on recreation and outdoor activity), rider achievement levels (progressive skill development opportunity within the therapeutic context), introduction to competition (aspects of para-equestrian sport are introduced and developed), therapeutic horsemanship (therapy and skill-building through horsemanship “from the ground”), and stable management vocational development (employment training through stable management and equine interactions for persons with disabilities). Our differentiated program streams share our overarching purpose to improve the lives of persons with disabilities in our community utilizing the power of the human-equine bond. A shared appreciation for this special human-equine relationship brings myriad individuals, families, and groups within our space, positively contributing to an inclusive and collaborative social fabric in our communities. Although our program serves persons with disabilities, it has positively impacted the lives of countless individuals of all abilities. Our program serves as a hub of community action where members of our community give back through participation, volunteerism, and a culture of inclusion.
