I’m passionate about staying up-to-date on the latest research—because what I learn in the literature directly informs how I care for my patients. For this Research Update at , I personally reviewed hundreds of studies, critically appraised the evidence, and distilled it into the most relevant, research-to-practice clinical applications.

Research evolves fast, and some of what we once thought was “best practice” has changed in just a few short years.

When I scheduled this session, I didn’t realize it would fall on Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day—a poignant reminder of why this work matters. 🩷

✨ Huge gratitude to for guest lecturing at McMaster Health Sciences on health and gender equity in nutrition and food access.

Nutrition isn’t just about what we eat—it’s also about the social and structural factors that shape our choices and opportunities.

💡 Nearly 1 in 5 Canadian families experience food insecurity. These rates are even higher in:
👉 Female single-parent households
👉 Families where women are the main income earners
👉 Racialized communities

Women often face added barriers to nutrition due to the wage gap, caregiving roles, cultural expectations, time/workload demands, and limited access to resources.

💬 This is why equity matters in every conversation about food and health.

✨ Did you know?
Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication where blood pressure rises and organ damage can occur. While doctors screen for certain risk factors early in pregnancy, here’s the surprising part: most cases happen in people with no identifiable risk factors at all.

👀 But what if one of those “hidden” factors is something as simple as… vitamin D?

🧪 New research is strengthening the link between low vitamin D levels and higher risk of preeclampsia and even preterm birth. Earlier studies were mixed, but the evidence is becoming harder to ignore.

⚖️ Vitamin D testing isn’t currently part of standard prenatal care guidelines — but based on the trajectory of the research, there’s a good chance it could be within the next decade.

💡 The good news? Vitamin D is easy to measure with a blood test and safe to supplement when guided by your healthcare provider. Ensuring your levels are optimal may be one of the simplest steps you can take to support a healthy pregnancy.

Special thanks to for guest lecturing on ADHD for McMaster Health Sciences Nutrition today.

She had the students engaged in thoughtful inquiry-based research and busted lots of myths around nutrition support for ADHD.

Go give her a follow for more evidence-based, research-to-real life knowledge bombs. Trust me when I say she's awesome and you'll love her.
