It is with broken hearts that the family of Dave Werner announces his passing on February 24, 2026. Dave received exceptional care at the Haldimand War Memorial Hospital and in the stroke unit at the Hamilton General Hospital. He passed away in his 81st year, surrounded by love.
Born on May 13, 1945, in Hamilton, Ontario, Dave was the only child of Ray and Laura Werner. Beloved husband of Heather (McCombs) for 57 years. He was a devoted father to Shannon (Kevin Backus), Aaron, and Alicia, and a proud, loving papa to Devon, Cohen, Seth, Beckett, and Natalie. Dave will also be missed by his brother in law, Brian, who shared many years of friendship with him.
Dave spent many years working at Westinghouse in Hamilton, but he was happiest when he discovered the joy of farming alongside his father in law. Those years on the farm brought him a sense of peace, purpose, and pride.
Reminders of Dave are everywhere, woven into the things he loved; blue spruce, Massey Ferguson, and Chevy — especially his 454 Chevelle, just to name a few. He was always animated and full of life, cheering passionately for Toronto, both the Leafs and the Jays. He was also known for his frequent use of Armor All, brewing the perfect pot of coffee, having a wood fire burning, keeping things looking like new and for his love of the morning — his favorite time of day, when he was eager to get up and get going.
We will forever cherish the many lessons Dave passed down. His teachings were wide ranging, with some being practical — making maple syrup, cutting grass, and operating the farm. Others were quieter but just as meaningful — how to give compliments freely, appreciate the world around you, treat people with kindness, and make others feel seen and valued. Dave led by example, demonstrating every day the importance of staying true to your convictions and working hard to finish every job to the very best of your ability.
Dave had a rare gift with people. He could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, and walk away having made a new friend. His warm nature and effortless ability to connect with others made him truly well liked — people gravitated toward him because he made them feel good just by being himself.
Donations in Dave’s memory can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to BALLARD MINOR FUNERAL HOME, DUNNVILLE (905-774-7277). Friends are invited to send condolences and sign the Book of Memories at www.ballardminorfh.ca. As per Dave’s wishes, a private interment will be held at a later date.
