Understanding your brain is essential for recognizing how deeply it influences your mental, emotional, and physical health.

For example, the frontal lobes are like the brain’s “control center.” They help us plan, make decisions, manage impulses, and regulate emotions. They also play a big role in personality, motivation, and social behavior.

You can think of the frontal lobes as the CEO of your brain — constantly organizing, problem-solving, and helping you think before you act. When this part of the brain is functioning well, it supports focus, emotional balance, and healthy decision-making.

However, when we’re tired, stressed, or overwhelmed, the frontal lobes can go “offline.” That’s when we might say or do things impulsively, struggle to focus, or find it harder to manage emotions. This helps explain why stress management, sleep, and mindfulness are so important — they keep the brain’s “CEO” operating smoothly and help us respond thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively.

We’re exploring interest in launching a Dungeons & Dragons–based therapy group for adults at One Tree Psychological!

This group would blend the fun and imagination of D&D with meaningful therapeutic themes like problem-solving, confidence-building, teamwork, emotional expression, and personal growth.

Before we roll for initiative, we’d love to know who might want to join!

Interested? Let us know by reaching out to contact@onetreepsychological.ca or vote on the poll in our stories!

The parietal lobes play an important role in helping us make sense of the world around us. They help us process touch, temperature, pain, and our sense of spatial awareness — basically, they tell us where our body is in relation to everything else.

You can think of the parietal lobes as your brain’s internal GPS. They help you know where your hands are when you clap, how far to reach for a cup on the table, and how to move through a crowded room without bumping into people.

However, when the parietal lobes are overstimulated or not functioning properly — such as when we’re under stress, distracted, or fatigued — we might feel disoriented or disconnected from our surroundings. This can show up as clumsiness, difficulty concentrating, or feeling “out of body” or detached.

Understanding the role of the parietal lobes reminds us how closely our brain’s processing of physical sensations is linked to our mental and emotional well-being. When we feel grounded and aware of our body in space, our nervous system feels safer and more balanced.

For example, the hippocampus plays a vital role in learning, memory, and emotional regulation. A helpful way to remember this is to think of a “hippo on campus.” Imagine a big, friendly hippopotamus wandering around a college campus, trying to remember where all the classrooms are and what it’s learning — that’s your hippocampus at work!

The hippocampus helps you store and recall important information, like your favorite memories, facts you’ve learned, or how to find your way home. It also helps put experiences into context so your brain can tell the difference between something that happened in the past and what’s happening right now.

However, when the hippocampus is affected by stress or trauma, it can struggle to do its job effectively. This might make it harder to remember things clearly, cause you to feel “stuck” in past experiences, or make present situations feel more threatening than they really are. Understanding the role of the hippocampus can help us see why caring for our brain — through rest, mindfulness, and emotional support — is so important for our overall mental health.

Understanding your brain is essential for recognizing how deeply it influences your mental, emotional, and physical health.

For example, the temporal lobe plays an important role in processing sounds, language, and emotions, as well as forming and retrieving memories.

When you hear a song that brings back a powerful memory or feel emotional after hearing someone’s tone of voice, that’s your temporal lobe at work! It helps connect what you hear to what you feel and remember.

However, when the temporal lobe becomes overactive or dysregulated — such as during times of stress or trauma — it can affect how we interpret sounds, emotions, or even social cues. This might cause us to feel overwhelmed, misread others’ intentions, or experience emotional flashbacks. Understanding how the temporal lobe functions can help us better manage our emotional responses and strengthen our overall mental well-being.
