Some people are skeptical about the idea of going to therapy because they don't understand how talking to someone about your problems or concerns is going to fix them. The truth is, that isn't the point of therapy.
In fact, your therapist isn't there to solve your problems or to tell you what to do. The therapist's role is to listen, understand, resource and support the client as they work toward their own goals. Often the therapist will provide a therapeutic intervention within the session that may be specific to a concern the client is working on, such as processing grief or trauma, learning how to master or change their thought patterns, or teaching a concept or skill. However, the bulk of the work takes place OUTSIDE of session.
Doing the work requires the client to reflect, apply and practice what they have been working on in therapy in their daily life. This is often challenging and uncomfortable. That is why the therapeutic relationship is so important, so that clients have a safe space to learn, grown and process these experiences as they make changes in their daily life.
