Having now received accreditation from CSEP, NASM and Fitness Alberta, we are excited to be moving into our next phase: ONLINE DELIVERY.

While we love teaching this course in person, our commitment to accessibility and our belief in the transformative power of technology compels us to ensure that this course, in its entirety, is also available online and via Livestream.

We are hard at work behind the scenes and making this happen, and expect a release of September 2022! We also hope to have completed the steps necessary to incorporate as a formal not-for-profit organization in Alberta so that we can work with other industry partners to get this important information out to as many people as possible!

Stay tuned for details!! In the meanwhile, follow our studio journey over at Action Potential Fitness

We could not be more excited to announce that our Level 1: Trauma Informed Fitness course has been approved by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology () for continuing education credits.

CSEP is the Canadian Gold Standard for Exercise Physiology and has been our primary certifying body since our graduation from NAIT. We are proud of the work done by the organization to further health and fitness outcomes in Canada and across the world, and truly believe that this approval legitimizes and validates the countless hours of research and work that has gone into bringing the 6A Trauma Informed Framework to life.

We will be offering another live course in the Fall in the Edmonton area and expect the English version of the course to be available by the early Fall. We also hope to have a French version of the course available in 2023.

We would like to thank everyone who has shown continued support in this project. It truly has been a labour of passion and love, and we are eager to see it grow and help other professionals across the country.

The fitness industry is full of well-intentioned, dedicated individuals who are all wanting to make a positive difference in the lives of their participants.

Unfortunately, it is also the victim of insiduous predatory tactics that ripen the stage for shame, stigma, stereotyping and other social harms that are standing in the way of improving health outcomes for the general population.

In Canada, approximately 16% of people are currently meeting the recommended daily minimums for physical activity. This means that, despite being inundated with fitness culture, 84% of Canadians are still struggling to "find their fit" within it.

And yet, despite continously falling numbers, the way we advertise and promote physical fitness has remained largely unchanged in decades. We continue to push narratives that are not evidenced based and have been clinically proven to discourage people from iniating new fitness regimes.

It is time for us to take a long, deep look at how we are promoting fitness and ask ourselves if our message and our methods are contributing to the growing sedentarism crisis and to start getting curious about how we can meaningful shift the dialogue to promote a more inclusive, wholistic perspective of health.

Approximately 3 out of 4 Canadians report living with moderate to extreme levels of stress! This stress epidemic is wrecking havoc on our mental and physical health, pushing our ability to cope and interfering with our ability to live full and rich lives.

Physical activity and exercise can be excellent ways to cope with high levels of chronic stress, but we must remember that exercise *is* a form of stress and that the body has a difficult time recognizing the difference between "good" stress and "bad" stress.

This means that, for most of us, we need to be mindful about how we engage in exercise in order to make sure that we are also adequately resting our body.

This is why a Whole Person, Trauma Informed strategy is so for fitness professionals. By learning to understand the psychological and social context of their clients, they will be better able to meet their physical needs safely and effectivey!

This week, we were given the opportunity to share our deep passion for a new approach for the fitness industry, one that recognizes the critical role mental health plays in physical well-being and vice versa.

As we spoke of our vision with other social entrepreneurs, they were eager to share with us how a trauma informed lens would radically improve their access. So many shared stories of how fear, shame, and stress were preventing them from undertaking the difficult task of getting started or even envisioning themselves living healthier lives.

We walked away from the conference with new friends, new clients, and a renewed sense of purpose for sharing with others what we have learned over the past three years: the future of fitness is trauma informed.

What do two ostriches have to do with trauma?

Everything!

For ' s birthday this year, .dubelockhart decided that everyone needed a little art therapy!
So she gathered some of Toni's nearest and dearest (including MTH's third collaborator ) and we collectively decided to do a virtual guided paint party!

We were shown an image of an ostrich, and our virtual instructor took us step by step through the process of recreating their masterpiece. We were given instructions on which colours to choose, where to draw lines and sharing and precise instructions on which steps to follow- which we all did to the best of our abilities.

And STILL all our paintings looked COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

We had all been given the same instructions, and had undertaken the exact same tasks but our interpretations of these instructions dramatically impacted how our paintings turned out.

They looked NOTHING like each other's and definitely looked nothing like the original. We laughed when we saw our final products, gobsmacked by how different we had all interpreted what we had experienced.

And it turns out that these are the perfect analogy for how trauma works.

Even if every single person lived the exact same EVENT, in the exact same way, our EXPERIENCE of that event will be completely different.

Experience is based largely upon our own individual perceptions, including our past histories, our state of mind in the moment, and how our nervous system interpreted the threat on our person.

What is seen as a minor inconvenience to one person could very well be traumatizing to another person, even if they lived the exact same event. It's all framed by our INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCE of it.

This means that the ONLY person that can decide if something was traumatizing to them is themselves. No one else is able to truly relate to how they are feeling on the inside and to how they were impacted by what they lived.

Just like art, trauma is entirely subjective!

Now, for the real question: Can you guess who painted which ostrich?

Today we launch the first level of our Moving Through Healing professional education series: Trauma Informed Fitness, a nationally accredited course for fitness professionals.

This work has been almost two decades in the making, and brings together 3 individuals- Canadian Society for Exercise of Physiology Certified Personal Trainers Zita Dube-Lockhart and Toni Harris and Registered Psychologist/Trauma Expert Janine Groeneveld.

Each brings their own unique professional backgrounds in the fields of behavioural science, psychology, sociology, physiology and exercise science to truly tackle trauma from a lens.

Together they culminate to over 25 years of academic study and 50 years of combined experience working with bodies and minds!

Today, we bring this work to our first cohort- a group of highly passionate fitness professionals who are all already deeply engaged in the process of making change in this world.

We hope to leave them not only feeling equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to be agents of change in their industry, but also feeling inspired and motivated to tackle these uncomfortable but important conversations.

Trauma. It definitely seems like *the* hot topic right now, especially as we all work to come to terms with the psychological and physical changes of the pandemic and begin to envision the return to a post-Covid normal.

But what does this word mean, and how does it relate back to fitness training? The answers might shock you!

We all know that exercise is medicine, especially when it comes to preventative health care.

But did you know that, when properly prescribed and carefully dosed, it is the #1 most effective intervention for anxiety, depression, and other similar mental health conditions?

It is also the most effective way of managing stress, and of recovering from stress related injuries!

Did you also know that your body doesn't recognize the difference between good stress and bad stress? On a physiological level, all types of stress evoke virtually the same responses- from car accidents to exercise.

This makes the gym a particular hot spot for stress and trauma related injuries, often stemming from exercise intolerance, excessive exercise or accidental retraumatization.

Like all good medicine, a thorough understanding of the illness is critical to creating a safe healing environment.

Our Trauma Informed Fitness series introduces participants to the 6A TIF Framework for creating a trauma sensitive practice, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and tangible tools they need to become part of the mental health solution.

Taking on the task of establishing a universal framework for the fitness industry is no small feat. The industry is as vast and diverse as the people who form it. From business owners, physiologists, athletic therapists, personal trainers, group fitness instructors, sport specialists, coaches, and everything in between, the goal of the 6A framework was to bridge the gap between the health care system and the spaces in which health thrives.

We sought to find accessible language and concepts that extended beyond just one area of the industry and would be equally applicable in multiple settings and contexts. Building upon the original pillars of the TIC model, designed for healthcare settings, the TIFS 6A Framework is a starting point rather than an end in and of itself.

We expect it to grow and fluctuate, as knowledge in this field continues to expand and we continue to integrate new learnings and best practices.
