These three things make a big difference in how my walks help my mental health and state of mind. Walks are great to process thoughts, and that’s good too, but when I need a break from my thoughts, when they are causing me stress or anxiety, these 3 things help me do that in a healthy way.

I help Christian women heal their relationships with themselves, others and God. I believe our faith is an important part of our mental health and should be included in therapy.

The dark mornings have been making it harder for me to get out on walks, which has resulted in a lot of my walks recently to be 10 min walks instead of longer. Then to add to the darkness the temperature has now hovering close to freezing. So this morning, I felt a shift in how hard it was to get motivated to go for a walk and I knew I needed to change somethings… so here’s what I adjusted to help me enjoy morning walks in the dark:

1. I pulled out my winter jacket (it’s been packed away still because it hasn’t snowed yet or been cold enough to use), and made sure to use my gloves and ear warmers. I recognized that my awareness of it being dark and cold outside makes me want to stay in my bed or at least on the couch in a blanket to stay warm. Making sure I dress a bit warmer than I technically need to gives me that warm cozy feeling while I walk.

2. I opted to not listen to anything during my walk. I usually listen to scripture, a podcast, or music while walking, but I felt the need for peace and quiet and space to think or just “be”. This helped me to notice more of the sounds of nature around me like the wind and leaves and that helped to calm me as I walked. (Which is why I wanted to highlight those sounds in the reel too!)

3. I made an effort to pay attention to the unique season I was walking in. I’m not sure when snow will come, but when it does it will likely stay for many months, and there will be different unique things to notice at that time, but today I was able to take in the trees, some that have lost most leaves, some still holding on with bright colours and the fact that it was windy but not too cold. I was also thankful for clear sidewalks to walk on and the fact that I didn’t have to worry about ice or snow.

How have you noticed the darker mornings affecting you?
