Eating Disorder Anonymous Edmonton First zoom meeting December 1 at 8:00 pm

03/18/2022

Recovery means living life on life's terms, facing pains and fears without obsessing on food, weight and body image. In our eating disorders, we sometimes felt like helpless victims. Recovery means gaining or regaining the power to see our options, to make careful choices in our lives. Recovery means rebuilding trust with ourselves, a gradual process that requires much motivation and support.

The problem (an eating disorder) is not about food/weight/body image or exercise. Neither is the solution!
Recovery is about feelings, and full recovery is not about control, but about surrender and acceptance. We cannot simply “cage the tiger and let it out three times a day to eat.” We ARE the tiger: caging ourselves doesn’t allow us to live free.

There are solutions to every problem, and all that stubbornness can come in handy: we are resilient and determined lot. We do find solutions that work for us, regardless of circumstances.

Our online meetings are run by a team of volunteer moderators. The meeting channel is only "open" during scheduled meeting times that have a moderator present. If a moderator is unable to cover a meeting, the meeting will be canceled. If you experience this, you can still take steps toward your recovery by reading the stories in the back of the EDA Big Book. If you have completed step 5 of the EDA big book with a sponsor, please consider becoming a moderator. We always have a need for additional moderators to cover all meetings.

Discord is the easiest way to communicate over voice, video, and text. Chat, hang out, and stay close with your friends and communities.

We find it helpful to think of balance like the legs of a chair. We need to maintain strength and stability in four areas of life to stay in balance: physical (nutrition/sleep/exercise), mental/intellectual (stimulating/challenging work), emotional/social (strong relationships), and spiritual/purpose-oriented (Higher Power/higher purpose). When any one of these “legs” becomes weak, we are at risk of losing our balance. When we use the tools of recovery – especially Steps Ten through Twelve – on a daily basis to strengthen all four “legs,” we can be at peace with ourselves and others: we are at low risk of imbalance.

With consistent practice and perseverance, the steps we take towards our goals will become spiritual and emotional disciplines. Small changes bring big results.

I used to believe the lie that I was the victim of what happened to me, whether it involved other people or a situation. It can be comforting to tell ourselves that someone else is to blame for our failures and pain. But that’s just an excuse for not taking responsibility, which keeps us stuck. When we believe we are victims, we look for excuses to go on with our destructive behaviors, trapping ourselves in a cycle of pain.
