Drs. Kieran Halloran, Gavin Low, Jason Weatherald and Karina Kaur used the 2024 Lung Health Research Grant to investigate the causes of reduced lung function after transplant. Their preliminary findings have already changed how post transplant lung function is monitored and could help guide new therapies that improve the wellbeing of lung transplant patients.

There are just two weeks left to apply for this year’s Lung Health Research Grant. The 2026 focus is lung cancer, Canada’s most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer deaths.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects 1 in 10 Canadians—over 4 million people—yet it remains unrecognized as a chronic disease contributing to gaps in policy, funding, and care.

Today, on World Kidney Day, The Kidney Foundation of Canada released its National Strategic Framework for Chronic Kidney Disease, Canada’s first step toward a unified roadmap to transform the health care system from reactive and fragmented to proactive and resilient.

The Framework focuses on 3 urgent priorities:

➡️ Prioritize Prevention, Early Detection, and Timely Intervention
➡️ Ensure Equitable Access to Kidney Care for All Canadians
➡️ Advance Research & Data for Better Kidney Health

It’s time for the Government of Canada to formally recognize CKD and adopt this Framework. Join us in calling on federal, provincial, and territorial governments to make CKD a health priority by visiting ActForCKD.ca.
