This is a QH stallion who received a treatment of TMJ mobilization, Craniosacral treatment and TCM acupuncture. After 1 session, there was much relief in the left side of his skull going from a dull expression to a more chipper fella as the result of improved circulation and correcting the placement of the bones of his skull.

“Red flags” gave it away for me. It was the heavy tone on the left frontal and the lift in the left nostril. Spend a few minutes with your horse and see if you notice “red flags”. If you can’t, let’s book an appointment and I’ll show you.

Here we go again!
We’ve got a string of milder weather headed our way, which will eventually turn into another skating rink out there for our unicorns. For days that are unfavorable for riding outdoors, here are some suggestions for equestrians to work on.

When the footing isn’t the best outside, and you know your horse needs movement to keep the joints and muscles from stiffening, take advantage of your indoor arena, or the aisle in your barn.

1. In Hand Work — encourage short, focussed 10 to 20 minute sessions.
- straight line walking
- halt-walk-halt transitions
- backing up slowly
- turns on forehand or hunches
This improves proprioception, joint mobility and postural strength — exactly what supports massage therapy results.

2. Pole Work — Indoors, outdoors, or in an aisle
- 2 to 3 poles space for walking
- poles slightly raised
This activates the core, encourages lift through the thoracic sling and improves stride symmetry.

3. Strengthening & Range of Motion Exercises.
- carrot stretches
- neck flexion and extension
- gentle tail pulls
- forelimbs and hindlimbs protraction and retraction
Providing the stretching exercises will keep major muscle groups from stiffening, therefore reducing joint disfunction.

4. Body Awareness — great for days when weather isn’t favourable and horses are fresh, but unrideable.
- walking over tarps or mats
- different footing textures such as a mattress or a kitty pool filled with empty plastic bottles
- cones, obstacles and tight spaces, by performing serpentines to keep the body movement flowing.

5. Simple Owner Check-Ins
- stride length
- Head carriage at a walk
- willingness to bend
- Uneven wear on hooves
With these observations, it provides awareness in improvement, catches resistance early, and you feel invested in the process.

Even small amounts of an intentional movement inbetween equine massage therapy sessions, or when weather is messy, this helps your horse maintain the changes we create during a massage treatment — especially when weather limits riding. This is a great time to focus on mobility, posture, and body awareness rather than performance.

If you’ve scheduled a spring float, consider this treatment as well. TMJ mobilization and Craniosacral modalities complement a dental float for relief of muscle tension in the TMJ, which is the MOST important joint in a horse’s body. Let’s have a chat and I’ll tell you why.

When I’m treating horses in my practice of equine therapies, I typically integrate the 20cm Assisi Loop, known for its PEMF technology that helps with reducing muscle tension, inflammation at the side of injury, improved circulation, and eliminates pain. Very similar to Megna Wave and Be**er, the Assisi Loop penetrates 10 inches into the body and begins the healing process at the molecular level of the cell. This technology has been around for a long time, but may be new to you. 10 years ago I was introduced to this technology by an equine Doctor of Chiropractic and I saw results in just one use. I also chose this technolgy because it’s compact, lightweight and not intimidating to horses when in use. Want to know more — it generates a twice-per-second, 2-millisecond burst of a 27.12-Megahertz radio wave signal with an amplitude of 4 micro-Tesla. This pulse-modulated field is non-thermal and non-invasive.

Recently, my horse acquired a massive contusion to her hamstrings and glutes on the right, which was the size of my own glute muscles. My mare had lost her footing in the paddock, landing on her ischium. She certainly did a number on herself and I was baffled at the size of the contusion. My instinct was to pull the Loops out and start reducing the swelling immediately before it becomes calcified or generates clots that could potentially migrate to her heart or brain, resulting in killing her. On the third day of treatment, though, I did have to lance it which brought the swelling down even more to 50% and continue to use the Assisi Loop as seen in the photos. This injury occurred a week ago from today, and within 1 week of using the Assisi Loop every day, the swelling is almost gone. Lancing it was needed, however, the PEMF technology really helped accelerate the healing process. If you want to know more, they are retailed on my website at www.healinghandsofmassage.com.

This week, my focus has been providing treatment to regular equine clients, including my own unicorn who is experiencing rapid growth spurts, and I continually appreciate referrals for new clients like these two mares with their before/after images. Two more days on the road treating horses, then returning to my clinical massage practice. Never a dull moment for me 🤪

Me - clicking my heels “We’re not in Kansas any more” lol.
Reality - “suck it up buttercup”.

Honestly, the older I get, the more I should winter in Arizona, treating horses.
