Janet is a graduate of the Massage Therapy program offered at Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology, who has acquired First Degree Reiki, and an Acupuncture Therapist completing certification from University of Hamilton in 2015. In April 2018, Janet also became a Certified Equine Assisted Learning Facilitator focusing on mental health challenges. The multi-modality services of Equine Massage Therapy expand from soft tissue manipulation, joint mobilization, PEMF, osteopathy-like techniques, craniosacral work and TMJ mobilization. These effective therapeutic treatments address specific concerns, as well as an overall focus and attention to all factors contributing to imbalances within the horse, including the TMJ. An initial consultation consists of the stable visit, visual audit, gait assessment, postural analysis, followed by a treatment. The integrated treatment may include soft tissue manipulation, joint mobilization, acupressure, osteopathy-like techniques, craniosacral, PEMF, along with stretching and remedial exercise suggestions. As she continues her education at the International College of Equine Therapies, Janet is focusing on equine and canine acupuncture. As she studies equine acupuncture, to obtain her diploma in Equine & Canine Acupuncture, your consent is required for her to continue her case studies. Servicing areas within an hour radius of Edmonton, clinical fees include the mileage. However, clinical fees subject to change due to increase in gas prices. I have seen statements on this subject floating around social media and I felt it was time to step in and set the record straight!

๐๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ค๐ž๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐š ๐ฐ๐ž๐ญ ๐ก๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ž.

For as long as I can remember, this practice has been taboo, you just shouldnโ€™t do it. However, the University of Kentucky came out with an extension publication a few years back on why this generalization is false and I want to share that information with you along with some of my own relevant research.

The thought here is that by blanketing a wet horse, you trap the cold water next to their skin, which will actually make them colder. And if this actually happened, I would agree that this practice would be detrimental. However, if you have ever blanketed a wet horse with a blanket that has fill or added insulation, you know that within a matter of hours your horse will be warm and dry again.

๐๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ฐ๐ก๐ฒ?

Well the fill in the blanket will wick away and absorb the moisture and the body heat from the horse will help it evaporate.

The moisture or humidity underneath the blanket could increase the risk of skin conditions or rain rot. As a result, you should change out the blanket as soon as you can to allow the blanket to adequately dry.

Also, if you use a sheet without fill, there is no insulation to absorb the moisture and this practice COULD be problematic. I found this to be true even for a dry horse. Two winters ago I performed research and placed temperature and humidity sensors underneath blankets of different weights including sheets with no fill. During the winter, I found that while the temperature under the sheet was warmer than the environment, the humidity under a rain sheet was far greater than the humidity under medium or heavy weight blankets as there wasnโ€™t any fill to absorb the moisture. This is problematic because when high humidity occurs alongside cold temperatures, it can feel much colder, as humid air conducts heat away from the body faster than dry air. These results demonstrate the value fill can add to a blanket - not only to provide insulation but also to regulate humidity. Based on these factors, I would not recommend blanketing a cold, wet horse with a rain sheet.

๐‚๐จ๐ง๐œ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง

Blanketing a dry horse is the gold standard. And if you are able to dry off your horse before you blanket, please do so. However, we know this isnโ€™t always feasible, especially for those who donโ€™t live with their horses or have to deal with unpredictable weather. And in those scenarios, blanketing a horse with a blanket that has fill is a much better option than letting a cold, wet horse shiver.

Cheers!

The visual audit of the buckskin told me it was the right side. Assessment and range of motion (ROM) testing confirmed growing pains affecting the right pelvis with hypertonic ITB and psoas muscle. The left eye of the blue roan confirmed left TMJ issue and decreased ROM in left pelvis, hock and fetlock jt. Follow-up treatments to follow in a few weeks time. If you would like to see your horseโ€™s before and after images, letโ€™s discuss how I can help.

When I have a day off, I look forward to my time spent at the barn, focusing on groundwork with my mare. However, in light of her recent growth spurts, I have found that massaging the glutes and incorporating PEMF and TCM acupuncture surrounding the hip area, provides significant relief for her expanding pelvis and femurs. Although her shoulders are now developing, she will likely teeter-totter over the next 2-3 years. To ensure a seamless transition into her adult body, particularly during this awkward phase โ€” the ugly duckling stage, I maintain regular equine treatments for my mare, ideally once a week. When I first acquired Saoirse five months ago, her body exhibited multiple areas of constriction, impeding blood flow, necessary for muscle & bone development. Fortunately, taking the holistic approach, combining chiropractic treatments, proper nutrition, farrier work, and equine therapies that I provide, has allowed this exceptional mare to blossom Happy horse = happy Janet ๐Ÿ˜Š

I enjoy working with weanlings and yearlings, especially during those stages of growth, so if your little one is struggling with weight gaining and development, letโ€™s have a chat to see where I can unlock the areas of development.

This is a QH stallion who received a treatment of TMJ mobilization, Craniosacral treatment and TCM acupuncture. After 1 session, there was much relief in the left side of his skull going from a dull expression to a more chipper fella as the result of improved circulation and correcting the placement of the bones of his skull.

โ€œRed flagsโ€ gave it away for me. It was the heavy tone on the left frontal and the lift in the left nostril. Spend a few minutes with your horse and see if you notice โ€œred flagsโ€. If you canโ€™t, letโ€™s book an appointment and Iโ€™ll show you.

Here we go again!
Weโ€™ve got a string of milder weather headed our way, which will eventually turn into another skating rink out there for our unicorns. For days that are unfavorable for riding outdoors, here are some suggestions for equestrians to work on.

When the footing isnโ€™t the best outside, and you know your horse needs movement to keep the joints and muscles from stiffening, take advantage of your indoor arena, or the aisle in your barn.

1. In Hand Work โ€” encourage short, focussed 10 to 20 minute sessions.
- straight line walking
- halt-walk-halt transitions
- backing up slowly
- turns on forehand or hunches
This improves proprioception, joint mobility and postural strength โ€” exactly what supports massage therapy results.

2. Pole Work โ€” Indoors, outdoors, or in an aisle
- 2 to 3 poles space for walking
- poles slightly raised
This activates the core, encourages lift through the thoracic sling and improves stride symmetry.

3. Strengthening & Range of Motion Exercises.
- carrot stretches
- neck flexion and extension
- gentle tail pulls
- forelimbs and hindlimbs protraction and retraction
Providing the stretching exercises will keep major muscle groups from stiffening, therefore reducing joint disfunction.

4. Body Awareness โ€” great for days when weather isnโ€™t favourable and horses are fresh, but unrideable.
- walking over tarps or mats
- different footing textures such as a mattress or a kitty pool filled with empty plastic bottles
- cones, obstacles and tight spaces, by performing serpentines to keep the body movement flowing.

5. Simple Owner Check-Ins
- stride length
- Head carriage at a walk
- willingness to bend
- Uneven wear on hooves
With these observations, it provides awareness in improvement, catches resistance early, and you feel invested in the process.

Even small amounts of an intentional movement inbetween equine massage therapy sessions, or when weather is messy, this helps your horse maintain the changes we create during a massage treatment โ€” especially when weather limits riding. This is a great time to focus on mobility, posture, and body awareness rather than performance.
