What is unique about Indigenous Psychological Services:

We try to reduce barriers by providing low cost counselling and free counselling with our interns, therapists and counsellors.
All providers are trauma informed and have to take multiple Indigenous trainings throughout the year. As well as, multiple clinical modalities.
We specialize and focus our research on Indigenous Health and Systematic Oppression.
We offer counselling to many non-indigenous people. 25% of our client demographics are those that are non-indigenous and are looking for wholistic counselling and wanting Somatic or EMDR counselling.
We offer access to smudge and ceremonies.
We focus on heart to heart experience and relational approaches.
Our team has been part of advocating for increasing access and reducing barriers. Our team has been interviewed by radio stations, news articles and investigative reporters about the difficulties in accessing mental health supports.
We offer groups and healing circles to reduce wait times for those accessing FNIB Services.
We serve all of Alberta.
Each month our team engages in case consultations for best practices and conversations with effective modalities.
IPS provides sponsorship opportunities for providers and clients.
The agency also provides bus tickets for those needing access that is not covered by grants.
Our agency is ran by a circle approach where all providers have a voice and a say to the organization. Even though there is one owner, it is ran by a circle to reflect our Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing.
We believe in building safe communities and collaboration.

Why Trauma Therapy-

Trauma Informed Practice understand the importance of how long term stress, and distressing events can cause changes in the brain , body and nervous system that will impact its ability to function.

Trauma therapy restores regulation back into the nervous system and focuses on reprocessing patterns in the brain.
Intergenerational trauma, colonial trauma, historical trauma, relational trauma and developmental trauma require trauma modalities. Talk therapy that is not tied to body based healing can create harm and re traumatization.

Trauma can often closely be tied to substance use, mental illness, stigma, health care access barriers, breakdown in relation and other challenges.

Trauma-informed practice means recognizing this link, making sure that people feel safe and are not re-traumatized by their care. Talk therapy and cognitive therapies require additional therapies in order to heal the body. It’s important to ask your provider what type of modalities they use and why?
Ask your provider what trauma training they have in order to support the healing of your body and re-patterning the brain.
