Adults may need help themselves with emotion coaching, to build and improve on the skills of connection an empathy, as mentioned below.
Reading, learning, trying things out, and talking with a therapist can compliment practice and tools to examine, support and reinforce healthy relationships, with oneself and with others.

Teens need consistent connection with caring adults who become a powerful buffer. It's not helpful or reasonable to have them "figure it out on their own." In fact it's risky to do so. "Your moves matter" as an adult in their life and have a huge influence on their development, what they do, and who they will become.
