Rural homestead life in 1927. When a woman wasn’t able to breastfeed or died in childbirth when a wet nurse was not available a goat nurse maid was brought in to save the starving infants life.

In the early 20th century, survival on rural homesteads often required resourcefulness and unconventional solutions. Infant mortality rates were high, and when mothers couldn’t breastfeed due to illness, malnutrition, or death during childbirth, families had to find alternatives quickly. Wet nurses—other women who could nurse—were sometimes employed, but in isolated areas they were not always available. In such cases, goats became an unlikely but vital lifeline. Goat’s milk was considered gentler on an infant’s stomach compared to cow’s milk, and in desperate circumstances, a baby could even be nursed directly from the animal.

Families saw goats not just as providers of dairy and meat, but as protectors of life itself. This practice, though unusual by today’s standards, highlights the ingenuity and determination of people to ensure survival in harsh conditions. Long before formula was developed, solutions like this were often the only hope of keeping an infant alive.

Stop. Telling. Twin. Mamas.
How bad it’s going to be.

We. Already. Know.

We know there will be sleepless nights.
We know there will be double the diapers.
We know there will be days we run on fumes.

But here’s the thing,
Telling us how miserable we’re about to be doesn’t help.

What we actually need?
“You’ve got this.”
“You’re stronger than you think.”
“It’ll be worth it.”

Because it will be worth it.
Every sleepless night.
Every messy moment.
Every second of figuring it out.

So if you see a mama pregnant with twins,
Skip the horror stories.
Skip the negativity.

Cheer her on.
Because she already knows the hard parts…
What she needs is hope.
