Meet the newest staff member at YEG Family Counselling--Janelle Cooper (they/them)!

Janelle loves to move. So much so that, as a kid, they dreamed of being in musical theatre. They made it as far as being an extra in the cinematic masterpiece, Mighty Ducks 2, but ultimately funneled that interest into improvisational dance classes and community dance events that incorporate somatic techniques. One of their particular passions is ecstatic dance--a free-form, unchoreographed dance practice where individuals move freely to music without specific steps. It's a community-based event that encourages participants to move in a way that feels authentic to them, often leading to a feeling of great joy and a deeper connection with their bodies and the present moment.

Along the way, Janelle's interest in movement and bodies resulted in a few other gentle career shifts. Now, Janelle is a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) with over a decade of experience as a Registered Massage Therapist. Working holistically--and combining all of their interests and skills-- Janelle incorporates somatic (body-based) interventions so that clients can process emotions and trauma that may not be accessible through talking. Janelle works with individuals (11+), couples, polycules, families, and any other relational structure, including consensually non-monogamous relationship constellations. They especially love working with q***r and neurodivergent folks and any other folks navigating marginalized identities.

All of this AAAANNDD they're also the parent of 1 child, 1 dog, 2 cats, and 60 indoor plants. Fun fact: their daily forest bath with their black Lab is the highlight of their day.

If Janelle sounds like someone you might connect with, check out their bio on our website (link in bio) and book your intake with us today!

Meet the second of YEG Family Counselling's newest Mental Health Therapy Interns, Corey Anderson!

Growing up in Northern Ontario, the boreal forest played a strong role in raising Corey 🌲 🌳🌲 So much so, that, as a kid, he dreamt of being a conservation officer. Life may have had other plans for Corey and his boundless empathy, but he still spends a fair amount of his free time bird watching 🐦 🦉 🦆 In fact, his home is in a designated Important Bird Area (IBA), which gives him many opportunities to see a wide variety of bird species during migration seasons.

Corey's also a proud music nerd and spends a lot of his time discovering new artists and sounds. Fun fact: every year on his birthday, he creates a new playlist and spends the year adding songs to it as a kind of personal time capsule.

As a proud q***r, Métis person with a learning disability, Corey's identities have shaped him into someone who deeply values authenticity, compassion, and finding humour--even when things get hard. He's excited to combine his life experience, over a decade of professional experience working with folks struggling with addictions, and all he's learned working towards his Masters in Counselling at Lethbridge University to make a huge impact in our community. Corey works with individuals, couples, and families from all walks of life, with a special interest in supporting q***r and neurospicy (neurodivergent) folks as they discover authenticity, strengthen relationships, and create lives that feel true to who they are, even when facing challenges.

If Corey sounds like someone you might connect with, check out his bio on our website (link in bio) and book your intake with us today!

Meet one of YEG Family Counselling's newest Mental Health Therapy Interns, Tasha Neufeldt!

Tasha knows a little something about hippos 🦛 Like the fact that they have red sweat that acts as sunscreen. It makes sense, then, that she dreamt of being a veterinarian when she was younger. That is, until she learned they had to put dogs down and was...less than thrilled about that.

Flash forward many years later (past the adolescence spent with facial piercings, wearing all black, and head banging at concerts) and Tasha is a Musical Therapist pursuing her Masters in Counselling from Lethbridge University. Tasha's passion is working with children and youth to help them navigate and understand their emotional experiences, as well as their relationships with others and themselves. She believes you are the expert on you, and values the importance of relationships in how we develop as children and relate to others and ourselves throughout our lives.

When she's not at YEG Family Counselling, she's most likely playing outside with her partner and energetic toddler! She loves being outside and spends as much time in nature as possible. A prairie girl at hear, she especially loves cold weather and dreams of snow all year round. Whenever she gets a chance to sit down, she dives into magical novels, plays guitar, or picks up a half-finished craft project.

If Tasha sounds like someone you might connect with, check out her bio on our website (link in bio) and book your intake with us today!

Juanita is back with the second installment in her 'Ask an Occupational Therapist (OT)' series. This is where she answers all of your🔥 burning🔥occupational therapy-related questions. This time we're answering a question about how a Mental Health OT can help with entering the workforce competitively for the first time while also struggling with severe depression.

For someone living with depression who wants to return to work, OT doesn’t just ask why they're struggling, it asks: how can we help you get back into the workforce in a way that feels meaningful and sustainable?"

Navigating religious trauma is a complex and often lonely journey. This is because so much of religion is about a community of people and their connections--none of which are as central as one's relationship to a higher power(s). In our latest blog, YEG Family Counselling clinician, Paige Cahill, unpacks how Attachment Theory can help us understand the impacts of religious trauma while also providing a pathway to healing. In our latest blog post, YEG FC Clinical Lead, Amy Nydam, talks about neurodiversity-affirming therapy--what it means, why it matters, and how therapy can be more supportive for neurodivergent, or neurominoritized, folks.

Our schools, workplaces, and healthcare systems are often neuronormative, meaning they center practices that don’t reflect or support the way many people's brains work. This minoritizes people whose brains don't process information in this very specific way, and can lead them to a lifetime of feeling misunderstood, pathologized, or pressured to mask who they really are.

Instead of trying to reduce or eliminate traits that differ from those that we hold up as 'normal' or 'typical' in our society, neurodiversity-affirming therapy creates space for people to unmask, to rest, to reflect, and to be truly seen. It prioritizes access, autonomy, and dignity. Read the rest of the blog to learn more about what this type of therapy looks like and how it might help you, or a loved one, settle more fully and deeply into their beautiful existence.

While most therapists strive to be accepting and non-judgmental, sadly the therapy room is not immune to bias and stigma. This includes stigma towards those who practice consensual non-monogamy (CNM), ethical non-monogamy, or polyamory. If you’re reading this blog post, maybe you’ve already had a poor experience with a therapist’s approach to conversations around CNM. Or maybe you’re wanting to avoid having that experience in the first place.

From what to look for in your first impression, to providing feedback to your therapist--and everything in-between--YEG FC clinician, Marek Buchanan, walks you through how to land a poly-friendly psychologist!

This blog is the first in our monthly 'Ask an Occupational Therapist (OT)' series in which our very own OT, Juanita Gnanapragasam, attempts to answer all of your🔥 burning🔥occupational therapy-related questions. To start, we thought we'd focus on the most common question we get when say we have an occupational therapist at our practice: "Cool! But what do they *do*?"

When most of us think about an occupational therapist, we envision a healthcare professional helping a patient set up their home to accommodate new mobility limitations 🦽 , or assisting someone physically so they can get back to work.

Ultimately, "what occupies you?" is a question that most of us don't think about all that much, but the reality is that there's a breadth of meaningful daily activities that occupy our time 👭 ✏️ 🚗 ⚽ 🎲 🎨 🧵 OTs help people overcome challenges that affect their ability to perform self-care, work, and leisure activities, ultimately promoting health, well-being, and independence. Read the full post to discover more of what OT has to offer and how it could help you live a healthy, happy, thriving life. Link in bio.

An avid gardener 🌱 and potter, Juanita loves to DO things. She loves creating things that invite a bit of magic into everyday life, whether that’s writing one-shot Dungeons and Dragons campaigns, or pulling together ingredients for a cozy, flavourful meal. She also loves quiet tactile tasks that help her reset; testing baking recipes, gardening, playing video games, or doing home renovations. Anything that gives her hands something to do and her mind a little room to breathe.

It's no surprise, then, that Juanita came up with a recipe 🥘 for her mental health Occupational Therapy practice:

INGREDIENTS
1 heaping cup of curiosity 🤔
¾ cup of quiet noticing (for when words aren’t enough)
1 full jar of “let’s figure this out together” energy
2 tbsp of humour 🤣
½ cup of lived-in compassion
A generous handful of creative tools, analogies, and activities
A pinch of nerdy delight in making things that help people feel capable

Instructions: Start with curiosity. Ask what’s not being said. Listen between the lines. Stir in compassion and structure until trust begins to thicken. Add humour to taste. Gently fold in emotional safety, community resources, sensory awareness, and values-based scaffolding.

Let sit.

Don’t rush the process. Serve with homework worksheets, pop-culture quips, and a dash of optimism. Best enjoyed by those who are tired of one-size-fits-all care and ready to put their knowledge into action. If this sounds like you, complete your intake with us and request Juanita today!

In our latest blog post, YEG FC psychologist Taylor Timmermans reminds us that 📣 teenagers are people too! 📣Sounds silly, maybe, but it's easy to lose sight of their humanity when they're slamming doors🚪, rolling their eyes at you 🙄, or taking the car without asking 🚗 Remember, adolescence is a tumultuous time full of hormones, testing boundaries, and, now more than ever, social media. And for those teens who are also navigating neurodiversity, their social and emotional landscape can be even more complex to navigate. Lucky for us, Taylor's a pro at working with teens and helping them tend to their heads and hearts🧠 💖
