Being runners ourselves, we understand the challenges of running-related injuries. In this video, Elizabeth Clark shares her experience with a high hamstring injury while training for the Boston Marathon. Isometric exercises are often under-valued and under-utilized as a great adjunct to isokinetic exercises to strengthen tendons. Be sure to watch future episodes to see how this exercise can be scaled and progressed as the running athlete progresses in their rehab!

For most conditions that benefit from shockwave therapy, its effectiveness is always far better when combined with stretching and strengthening exercises, proper training recovery, nutrition, sleep and progressive loading. Rarely is shockwave therapy effective as a stand-alone treatment. It is not a magic wand. It is simply an adjunct treatment to an overall management strategy.

Very few exercises are as simple to do and yet as beneficial as the "crab walk" for our hip abductors. It is a favourite among runners and athletes as a warm up exercise. Even our seniors love this exercise! Simple, effective, practical and super scale-able! It is exercise at its best!

The Semont Plus is not for the faint of heart. It is a challenging maneuver for both the patient and therapist to execute. The "Plus" lowers the patient 60 degrees below horizontal. It is often reserved for the mobile patient when the usual maneuvers are not proving effective. Here at Elevation Physiotherapy, we have advanced practice vestibular therapists to manage the most complex vestibular problems. Give us a call!

We get it. Life is busy and allocating time for exercise is difficult. Exercise requires energy, intentionality, time, space and necessary resources. All of which are in short supply when our schedules are already stretched thin. But can you do one thing once a day? How about two? What if we start small and build up slowly? Talk to us about your pain but also about how much time you can invest in your rehab and we will work with you to strike a balance between what is necessary and what is achievable.

After a long injury, our power and speed muscles are the last to recover. To prevent another injury and to improve running performance especially to be able to run up hills or to return to running at faster paces, plyometric strength is important. Slow and heavy exercises are now supplemented with power and speed exercises. Adding a single leg balance component adds another layer of difficulty.

Understanding the reasoning behind every aspect of your care is vital. Rehab is a process and a journey. The more our patients understand their process, the more empowered they will feel.

Elizabeth Clark keeps very active in several activities including long-distance running (marathons/half-marathons), strength training, Pilates, biking and cross-country skiing. She has ran the Boston Marathon twice! She also spent her youth in competitive dance including ballet, tap and jazz. Through these activities, she has learned the importance of keeping active, while using physiotherapy to address the injuries or problem areas that can come along with an active lifestyle.

Elizabeth has spent many years working alongside orthopedic surgeons and sport medicine physicians in Edmonton, both for the shoulder as well as the knee. Through this she has a special interest in pre- and post-operative physiotherapy for complex shoulder issues, as well as various soft-tissue knee issues. She values taking her time with patients, getting to understand their needs and working collaboratively to help manage their injury and achieve their goals. Her commitment to continuing education is demonstrated by her many courses ranging from McKenzie to chronic pain management to diagnostic imaging. Welcome to Elevation Physiotherapy, Elizabeth!
