Should I be concerned that my jaw clicks? A clicking jaw joint (TMJ) may be innocuous but it could also be an early sign of a developing disc problem. If the clicking is associated with pain or locking, this should be assessed quickly. Conservative treatment should be started immediately to prevent TMJ disc problems from worsening.

Clinical Tip: Running in different types of shoes is one strategy to avoid developing repetitive strain injuries. Dissimilar shoes encourages the utilization of different muscle activity, biomechanical strategies, energy expenditure and distribution of ground reaction forces. This creates different adaptations from one run to the next.

Do your joints ache when exercising in colder weather? Remember that stronger muscles can reduce impact loads on joints far better than weaker muscles. During the colder months, remember to continue training for strength and contraction speed (rate of force development). Don't skip the warm up and ensure you wear shoes with good traction!

Here are some concussion facts: No two concussion injuries are ever alike. Head impact is not necessary to sustain a concussion. Helmets can prevent skull fractures but they cannot prevent concussions. Early diagnosis is vital. Early and light exercise are encouraged rather than bedrest in a dark room. Concussion symptoms can be delayed by hours, days and up to a week. Mouth splints can prevent damage to teeth but cannot prevent concussions. Most children sustain concussions from falls from furniture more so than from sporting activities.

The upper fibers trapezius muscle is often massaged and stretched but spends the least amount of time being strengthened. As this muscle weakens with slouched postures like deskwork, it gets stiffer and tighter. It's a common muscle that produces headaches after whiplash injuries. Strengthen this muscle and its tightness and stiffness will lessen.

Aside from body building, regaining muscle size is important for those whose muscles have atrophied either from disuse, disease or surgery. There is a good relationship between bigger muscles and stronger muscles. Both must be re-trained for sports performance, injury prevention and joint protection. Where regaining strength is about lifting heavier loads, regaining hypertrophy is about volume.

We spend a lot of time educating our patients on the importance of their exercises as a part of their treatment plan. If you understand the reasoning and purpose behind each exercise or recommendation, it will help you maintain focus, discipline and perseverance in your rehab journey

Rate of force development is the time it takes a muscle to reach peak strength. It allows muscles to move joints quickly and so it is essential for sports performance, injury prevention and fall prevention. It must be trained differently from strength. Contraction speed is important. Exercises like plyometrics, sprinting, jumping and hopping exercises are some examples.
