For those of us trained in Vestibular Rehab, the use of vestibular goggles is essential. Without them, we would not be able to do our work effectively. Both Alice and Albert Chan have Advanced Vestibular Certifications in Vestibular Rehab from the University of Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh program is only 1 of 2 Advanced certifications in the world. We are both passionate about treating patients with dizziness. Both Alice and Albert are certified in the management of concussion and vestibular conditions.

This is part 2 of Elizabeth's strength progression for proximal hamstring injuries. See our February 2nd post for part 1. Progressing exercises is an essential component of building strength and resiliency in muscle and tendon injuries. It's never a one-size-fits-all approach. If a patient finds a certain progression too easy or too difficult, then the exercise has to be changed to meet the needs of the patient. Personalized care is key!

Taking a much needed break from Clinic life. Every year, I need to find winter which is becoming more and more elusive each passing year: ski, snow, sun, cold, mountains!

Should you be concerned if your jaw clicks? A sudden onset of new clicking especially if it causes a reduction in the movement of your jaw or if it is associated with pain should be assessed quickly. Disc displacements and injuries can be challenging to resolve. The sooner we can address the issue, the better we can prevent the disc from displacing further. When in doubt, seek the advice and consultation of your dental specialist or Physiotherapist with special training in TMJ disorders as soon as possible!

Being runners ourselves, we understand the challenges of running-related injuries. In this video, Elizabeth Clark shares her experience with a high hamstring injury while training for the Boston Marathon. Isometric exercises are often under-valued and under-utilized as a great adjunct to isokinetic exercises to strengthen tendons. Be sure to watch future episodes to see how this exercise can be scaled and progressed as the running athlete progresses in their rehab!

For most conditions that benefit from shockwave therapy, its effectiveness is always far better when combined with stretching and strengthening exercises, proper training recovery, nutrition, sleep and progressive loading. Rarely is shockwave therapy effective as a stand-alone treatment. It is not a magic wand. It is simply an adjunct treatment to an overall management strategy.

Very few exercises are as simple to do and yet as beneficial as the "crab walk" for our hip abductors. It is a favourite among runners and athletes as a warm up exercise. Even our seniors love this exercise! Simple, effective, practical and super scale-able! It is exercise at its best!

The Semont Plus is not for the faint of heart. It is a challenging maneuver for both the patient and therapist to execute. The "Plus" lowers the patient 60 degrees below horizontal. It is often reserved for the mobile patient when the usual maneuvers are not proving effective. Here at Elevation Physiotherapy, we have advanced practice vestibular therapists to manage the most complex vestibular problems. Give us a call!
