January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and we are honoured to share a powerful story submitted by the daughter of one of our former residents.

Her mother’s legacy lives on through her wish to give back, by donating her organs and contributing to scientific research that helps advance understanding, care, and hope for future generations.

This story is a reminder that even in the hardest journeys, there is purpose, compassion, and impact.

Together, we can raise awareness, support families, and continue the important work toward a world without Alzheimer’s.

💜 Read the full story and learn “How to Participate in Alzheimer’s Research” in our January newsletter.

How to Start the Conversation (With Care)

Starting the conversation can feel like the hardest part.

A few gentle tips:
• Choose a calm, private moment
• Lead with concern, not conclusions
• Use “I” statements: “I noticed…” or “I’ve been feeling concerned…”
• Listen more than you speak
• Reassure them that support means maintaining independence, not losing it

These conversations come from love. Taking them slowly is okay.

💬 Today is Bell Let’s Talk Day 💙

Mental health matters at every stage of life—including as we age. For older adults, staying connected, feeling heard, and knowing support is available can make a meaningful difference.

Today is a reminder to check in with our parents, grandparents, neighbours, and friends. A simple conversation, a shared story, or a listening ear can help reduce isolation and strengthen our sense of community.

If you or a loved one could use support, help is available:
📞 Talk Su***de Canada: 1-833-456-4566 or text 45645 (4pm–12am)
📞 Seniors Distress Line (Canada): 1-844-219-3499
🌐 Wellness Together Canada: Free mental health resources & counselling

Let’s continue to create spaces where every generation feels supported, valued, and understood, today and every day. 💙

On Friday, we celebrated five of our residents who are 100+ years young 🎉

With our eldest centenarian at 106, the room was filled with stories, laughter, and joyful moments, made even more memorable by the music of the Central Lions Band.

What a privilege it is to celebrate lives so rich in history, resilience, and heart.

Signs Families Often Notice After Time Together

After spending extended time together, families often notice changes that are easy to miss during quick visits.

Some common signs include:
• Increased forgetfulness or confusion
• Changes in personal hygiene or housekeeping
• Difficulty managing medications or meals
• Withdrawal from conversations or activities
• Increased falls, fatigue, or mobility challenges

Noticing these signs doesn’t mean something is “wrong.”
It means it may be time for a thoughtful conversation, and extra support.

Some journeys take families down separate paths, filled with uncertainty, hope, and countless unanswered questions.

For a long time, this couple walked their own roads, each on a different journey, while their family wondered if they would ever be able to come home together again.

Today, this photo says everything.

Together. At home. Where they belong.

At Canterbury, we believe love doesn’t stop at transitions, and neither should togetherness. We work intentionally, compassionately, and creatively to ensure couples can remain side by side, through change, through care needs, and through every chapter that follows.

Because home is not just a place.
It’s being together. ❤️

💙 Thank You for Answering the Call 💙

As our 6th Annual Promise of Home Fundraising Campaign came to a close on December 31, we want to pause and say one simple, but heartfelt, thank you.

Because of your generosity, we raised $125,845 in just five weeks. This incredible outpouring of care will have an immediate and meaningful impact on the lives of our residents.

As you answered the call, here’s what we heard:
💬 “There is a special environment and spirit of care on Canterbury Lane… Committed care staff make a real difference!”
💬 “Your care and concern for families at Canterbury is evident every day.”

While we set an ambitious goal of $175,000, we are deeply inspired by the trust, generosity, and commitment of our community, and we know that together, we will reach this milestone in 2026.

If you’d still like to give, donations are always welcome:

Thank you for standing with us in our shared beliefs and for being the Heart of Canterbury. 💙

When the Holidays Raise Quiet Questions

The holidays often bring families together, sometimes for the first time in a while.
And with that time together, families may notice subtle changes in someone they love.

Maybe Mom seemed more tired than usual.
Maybe Dad struggled with daily tasks that once felt easy.
Maybe something just felt… different.

Noticing changes doesn’t mean panic, it means care.
This January, we’re sharing gentle guidance for families navigating these moments with compassion and confidence.

💛 You’re not alone.

Thank you to our residents, families, staff, and partners for being part of our story. Here’s to carrying these moments with us and welcoming all that 2026 has to offer.

Happy New Year from all of us at Canterbury! ✨
