We had a fantastic evening last night at our 1st Local 301 Dinner & Learn. We were joined by from for a discussion on Public Health Care - keeping it public and the current danger being presented by Bill 11 .

And had a little Anniversary party for the Canada Health Act!

🇨🇦🍁🏥 Canadians need to let the federal government know it must enforce the Canada Health Act now to protect Albertans and Canadians from changes in the Alberta Government’s Bill 11 that will cause the Americanization of Canada’s public health-care system.

The Canada Health Act became the law of the land on April 17, 1984.

We can acknowledge this important anniversary of the day when universal public health care became available to all Canadian citizens with a picture of a cake celebrating the anniversary of the Canada Health Act.

UNA asks Canadians to take a photo or create an image of a cake and post it on social media with a reminder that Canadian medicare is a true nation-building project and that this great Canadian achievement is in danger because of Bill 11. Even a picture of a cupcake will do. Please tag Prime Minister Mark Carney and federal Health Minister Marjorie Michel in your social media posts.

Bill 11 will introduce dual practice for medical doctors, who will be able to charge their patients for timely service while the rest of us have to wait. This violates the Canada Health Act and Ottawa has the power to stop it. They need to use that power.

Don’t let April 17, 2026, be the last time we are able to celebrate the anniversary of the Canada Health Act!

A message from UNA:
As you are aware Canadian medicare can never be taken for granted. There is now a very direct threat to Medicare across Canada - and it starts here in Alberta - Bill 11.

UNA advocates across Canada and have been calling on the Federal Government to acknowledge that Bill 11 violates the Canada Health Act.

UNA is calling for a day of virtual action across Canada on APRIL 17th.

April 17, 1984 is when the Canada Health Act became law. Legislation that was unanimously supported by all parties.

This April 17, we ask:
If the Federal Government does not act to protect medicare will this be the last year we can celebrate the Canada Health Act?

We are not asking for rallies or big events. We are asking Albertans and Canadians to post messages on social media marking the anniversary. We suggest posting a picture of a cake or even a cupcake to symbolize the anniversary.
And we ask everyone to tag Prime Minister Mark Carney and Federal Minister of Health Marjorie Michel.

Please help inspire members, family and friends to take a few minutes on April 17 to send a very important message.

Health Shared Services has informed United Nurses of Alberta that for the 2026/27 registration year, Registered Psychiatric Nurses covered by the multi-employer Provincial Collective Agreement will be reimbursed for registration and professional liability protection through e-People.

Total reimbursement for all qualifying UNA members registered with College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta for 2026/27 has been calculated at $701.40, HSS said.

CRPNA requires RPNs to have professional liability protection through the Canadian Nurses Protective Society.

HSS said that at this stage in its planning process qualifying UNA members should not submit receipts for CRPNA members ship fees or CNPS professional liability insurance through iExpense.

Members are required to ensure they complete their CRPNA registration before the start of the new registration year, HSS said. Further details may follow as the HSS planning process continues.

HSS is the health care corporation created by the Alberta government to administer administrative work shared by the new health care agencies and corporations created as a result of the breakup of Alberta Health Services.

The Other Wet Floor
Workplaces are diligent about mitigating the risks of physical injury to their people. Yet, when it comes to psychological well-being, there are often fewer precautions. It is often the ‘other wet floor’—the overlooked emotional hazards of working in a helping profession.

The Psychology of Change - A Penny for your Thoughts
These days, one of the only things you can expect with certainty is change. How people experience change -mentally, socially and physically- is unique and can lead to conflict when we don’t have the awareness and skills to manage our dysregulation. Using the defense cascade model (and more than just a little humour) this workshop answers the questions: “What is change?”, “Why does it feel so uncomfortable?” and “How can I help myself and my team to manage our reactions in times of uncertainty, to avoid conflict and achieve our goals?”.

Canadians from coast to coast will hold a National Day of Action for Public Health Care. United Nurses of Alberta strongly encourages its members and supporters of public health care to send a message to Ottawa demanding that our federal government enforce the Canada Health Act and save public health care from the threat of Alberta's Bill 11.

Bill 11 – known officially Alberta’s Health Statutes Amendment Act, 2025 – is a danger to public medicare everywhere in Canada.

Not only does it create a two-tier American-style health care system in Alberta, but it will also open the door to the destruction of public health care in every other Canadian province. It is in violation of the Canada Health Act.

We must demand that Canada’s leaders say no to Americanized health care and enforce the Canada Health Act to save Canadian medicare.

Local 301 has Local conditions that change the length of our breaks and hours of work from the main body of the UNA Collective Agreement?
If you work or have worked at other sites, your breaks are different.

It is important to remember if you are on a unit that combines breaks –
if you miss a break or have to take only a partial break, you are paid according to the portion of break missed (OT or straight time), not for the entirety of the break @ 1 rate if it is a combination of paid and unpaid break.

This is a bargained Local Condition pre-dating to when Local 301 was part of Staff Nurses Association, before joining UNA.
