Kistehitah kimeskanām (honour your journey/road) is a project arising from the identification of unmarked graves at former residential school sites across Turtle Island. It comes from a vision of a path lined with baby moccasins leading to a beautiful healing lodge. A pipe ceremony was held for the start of this project with Elder Ruth Cardinal de Ubiera in 2021.

The little moccasins (maskisina), moss bags (wâspisona) and baby star blankets created as part of this project will honour the children who were sent to the schools as well as the new spirits coming into the world today.

An Elder or knowledge keeper will join us to share teachings and language.

Items made during the workshop will be gathered together in ceremony and then gifted to little ones arriving from the spirit world, which means the maskisina, wâspisona and star blankets created during this workshop will not go home with participants.

You will go home with skills that can be used to make more crafts and be shared with others. Take home patterns and instructions will be provided.

We have two spots left!

If you are an experienced machine sewist with solid sewing skills we'd love for you to join us.

This star blanket workshop takes four days over two weekends: April 25-26 and May 30-31. Participants are asked to commit to all four days when registering.

Sewing skills required for this workshop are beyond a beginner level due to the intricate construction process.

Finished star blankets will stay with our project to be gifted to families when a baby arrives from the spirit world. The blankets will be part of a welcoming ceremony taught to us by Nohkum Ruth Cardinal de Ubiera.

The workshop will take place at Grow Centre and run from 10 am to 6 pm all four days. We provide a light breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack. A childcare subsidy is also available.

- the longest serving member of the Regional Environmental Action Committee since 1990. In 1992, REAC was incorporated as a non-profit, society with two hundred members all around the Lesser Slave Lake region. A group of concerned citizens who continue to be involved in projects to help our environment.
Ekti and her partner David live on the shores of Lesser Slave Lake, in a solar- and wind-powered house, off grid, which they started building in 1992 and continue to finish.
