A little about our instructor: Elder: Okimaskwiw Ekti Margaret Cardinal, an
indigenous Knowledge Keeper, was raised in a
Northern Plains Cree family which maintained,
practised and taught the values of traditional Cree culture. Originally from Saddle Lake First Nations in north eastern Alberta. - a well known Tipi and Tent Maker, who also teaches her craft when requested.
- the “Resident Kokoom” at Young Indigenous Women’s Circle of Leadership gatherings each year.
- the longest serving member of the Regional Environmental Action Committee since 1990. In 1992, REAC was incorporated as a non-profit, society with two hundred members all around the Lesser Slave Lake region. A group of concerned citizens who continue to be involved in projects to help our environment.
Ekti and her partner David live on the shores of Lesser Slave Lake, in a solar- and wind-powered house, off grid, which they started building in 1992 and continue to finish.

Our free workshop this month is an adult moccasins class! We have five spots still open.

In keeping with our project's vision, moccasins made at this workshop will stay with our Society to go into ceremony and then be gifted to families who have a loved one journeying back to the spirit world.

This workshop takes four days/two weekends to complete. Folks are asked to commit to Feb.28-Mar.1 and Mar. 21-22 (10 am to 6 pm all four days).

Kistehitah kimeskanām is a project arising from the identification of unmarked graves at former residential school sites across Turtle Island. It comes from a vision of a path lined with baby moccasins leading to a beautiful healing lodge. A pipe ceremony was held for the start of this project with Elder Ruth Cardinal de Ubiera in 2021.

The moccasins (maskisina), moss bags (wâspisona) and crib sized star blankets created as part of this project will honour the children who were sent to the schools, the new spirits coming into the world today and spirits journeying home.

An Elder or knowledge keeper will join us to share teachings and language.

You will go home with skills that can be used to make more crafts and be shared with others. Take home patterns and instructions will be provided.
