It's that time of year, flu season. Often colds can result in a nasty cough, and in many cases finding the right cough syrup can help give you some relief.

If you are considering a cough syrup, remember the following:

Always follow the directions on the package.

Typically, cough syrups can be taken every four hours but it’s important not to take more doses in a day than are recommended.

Be sure to drink plenty of fluids to assist in breaking up mucus and clearing congestion.

Ask our pharmacist for advice on whether a cough syrup could be helpful and if so, which one they would recommend for you.

Got your first nasty cold of the season? That sore throat, runny nose, and/or mild cough is probably going to last one to two weeks.

Although you can be contagious throughout the time you have symptoms, you’re most likely to infect someone else during the first few days. If you can, stay home to rest and recover, and reduce the risk of passing it on to someone else, particularly those around you who may be at risk of complications.

If you have concerns about worsening symptoms or are wondering if it’s time to see your doctor, our pharmacist is here to help

A runny nose, body aches, fever, and maybe even a sore throat, too. These are the classic symptoms of the flu.

You can protect yourself, and those around you, by washing your hands often, staying home when you are sick and getting a flu shot. The flu shot can reduce your chances of getting very ill and of spreading the virus to others if you do get the flu.

Read more about the flu shot: https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/flu-influenza/get-your-flu-shot.html

Flu vaccines are available starting October 20th! Speak with our pharmacist about getting your flu shot.

We often think of bacteria as being bad, but probiotics are frequently called “good bacteria” because they help to keep your gut healthy. These tiny microorganisms populate the small and large intestines, supporting digestion, immune health, and more.

You can find probiotics in some foods, like yogurt and kimchi, and in supplements.

Ask our pharmacist for advice on taking a probiotic supplement.

Pollinators like bees are vital to growing the foods we need, and most will ignore us if we leave them alone.

But do you know what to do when you or someone with you has been stung by a bee or wasp?

For most people, a sting is just painful. Dropping into the pharmacy for pain medications or an antihistamine can do the trick!

But for a few, it can be life-threatening. You may not know you're one of them until after you've been stung. A severe allergic reaction to bee stings (anaphylaxis) requires emergency treatment.

Talk with us to know the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis, and what you can do to protect you and your family.

The most common cause of cataracts is aging, however did you know that there are several other contributing factors that can put you at risk? These include:

Taking steroid medications
Smoking
Damage from UV rays
Some diseases, such as diabetes

If you have questions about the health of your eyes or are wondering if it’s time to see your doctor, stop by and speak with our pharmacist.

Protect your family from sunburns, and long-term sun damage, by following this advice from the Canadian Dermatology Association:

Use an SPF 30 or higher broad-spectrum sunscreen – and reapply often, especially after swimming and sweating.
Wear a hat, sunglasses, and cover up with as much as possible.
Stay in the shade and try to schedule your outdoor activities around the peak hours of 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Talk to our pharmacist about your risks and how to stay safe this summer.

Summer vacation is calling! But if you’re headed on a far-flung holiday, you should make sure you’re up to date on your travel vaccines.

Depending on where you are travelling, you could be at risk for many vaccine preventable illnesses. For many places, the immunizations you might need could include protection for hepatitis A, travellers’ diarrhea, and meningitis.
