📚✨ Food is more than what’s on our plate – it’s stories, culture, identity, and connection.

Sharing Food Stories is a free, classroom-ready resource for grades 2–7 that invites students to explore food through storytelling, cultural perspectives, and meaningful reflection.

Students build food literacy and empathy while connecting food to:
🌾 Culture
🧡 Community
🌎 Land and Indigenous perspectives
🗣️ Their own lived experiences

It’s curriculum-aligned (Language Arts, Social Studies, Health & Wellness, and more!) and designed to be flexible and easy to use in the classroom.

Sharing Food Stories also supports land-based learning and reflection on food, identity, and community – helping students better understand food systems, agriculture, and the role local Alberta dairy farmers play in feeding communities.

Happy Grilled Cheese Day! 🥪🧀 In 1861, Isabella Beaton introduced the grilled cheese sandwich to the world and revolutionized lunchtime forever.

Although Isabella’s sandwich required an oven, the modern version that we all know was created in the US during the Great Depression and featured extra ingredients like avocado and pineapple! Try our rendition of this classic sandwich: bit.ly/3WlgvHQ

Meet Jason, a third-generation dairy farmer from Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. 🐄🌾

Jason and his wife Kristine, along with their three kids, proudly run Rietveld Dairies Ltd. Their story goes back to the 1950s, when Jason’s grandfather started a new life in Canada on a dairy farm. In 1980, Jason’s parents purchased the farm he now operates with his own family. From a young age, Jason was passionate about dairy farming and knew he wanted to carry on the family tradition.

Starting in 4-H, Jason developed a love for raising and caring for his herd. Today, the family milks 150 cows (and growing!), with a focus on animal care, genetics, and running an efficient, sustainable farm.

Jason’s favourite part of farming is raising the next generation of cows and watching them thrive. His goal is to create a strong future for his children so they can carry on the family tradition. 🧡🐮
