CFASA proudly joins many others across Canada and the world in proclaiming November as Indigenous Disability Awareness Month (IDAM).

IDAM was created in 2015 by Indigenous Disability Canada/British Columbia Aboriginal Network on Disability Society (IDC/BCANDS) and first proclaimed by the Government of British Columbia. In 2017, the United Nations urged Canada to officially recognize it nationally.

IDAM celebrates the social, economic, and cultural contributions of Indigenous people with disabilities and raises awareness of the ongoing intersectional challenges they face. Today, it’s recognized by governments, communities, and organizations across Canada and beyond.

At CFASA, we're proud to be building meaningful partnerships with Indigenous communities across Alberta and are committed to strengthening relationships, sharing knowledge, and supporting Indigenous people with disabilities through inclusion and collaboration.

Lest we forget. Tuesday, November 11 is Remembrance Day, a day of reflection and remembrance for those who served, and continue to serve, our country. At CFASA, recognizing Remembrance Day reminds us of the importance of reflection, gratitude, and the ongoing responsibility to support peace, inclusion, and justice in our communities.

We want to say a huge thank you to Hend Mohammadie and the Ottewell Pharmacy for supporting CFASA’s first Flu Clinic this past Sunday! Visiting a pharmacy or doctor’s office can sometimes be challenging, so with the support of Hend and Ottewell Pharmacy, we were able to create a clean, calm, and sensory-friendly environment right here at the Centre.

“The atmosphere was very relaxed. There were toys that my son could play with, and a comfortable place to sit and watch cartoons. Hend was really great and moved efficiently. The staff member was awesome. She helped my son to feel more comfortable, and distracted him during the injection. Thank you so much to everyone, you all made this experience a positive one!”

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM) — a time to highlight the importance of inclusive hiring and recognize the valuable contributions people with disabilities bring to the workplace. Individuals with disabilities offer unique strengths, perspectives, and skills that help organizations grow and innovate!

Joshua, a participant in our EmploymentWorks program, shared his experience and perspective:

“I was diagnosed earlier this year. I’ve always felt like I was weird, and now I realize I’m just different. I look for tools to help me improve myself, and I recently joined EmploymentWorks. It has helped me to build confidence – how to improve aspects of myself, but also to accept myself. I tell myself something positive every morning –

You’re gonna do perfect today.
Life is good, you’re happy.
You can do anything you put your mind to.”

Thank you, Josh, for sharing your story and reminding us of the importance of self-acceptance and growth.

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM)!

DEAM celebrates the contributions of workers with disabilities and promotes inclusive employment opportunities for all. It’s a time to recognize the value of diversity in the workplace, an opportunity to celebrate and discuss employment inclusion and to collaborate to increase inclusive hiring. When everyone’s skills and perspectives are included, organizations and communities thrive.

At CFASA, our EmploymentWorks program helps Autistic and neurodivergent adults build the skills, confidence, and experience they need to succeed in and find meaningful employment.

September 30th is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

“It’s not just a part of who we are as survivors- it’s a part of who we are as a nation.”

On June 3, 2021, the federal government passed legislation to designate September 30th as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day is for Canadians to acknowledge the truth of residential schools, and to honour survivors, their families and affected communities.

Why do Canadians wear Orange on this day? To honour and uphold Survivors and Intergenerational Survivors of the Indian Residential School system, and to commemorate those who didn’t return home.

Reconciliation is an ongoing process rooted in action, for individuals and as members of our communities. It’s time to listen, learn, reflect, support, and extend our learning to taking action. This year, we took some time at our staff meeting to understand allyship and what it truly means.

We encourage everyone to continue learning and visit the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation website: https://nctr.ca/
