While the new USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans make improvements in emphasizing protein intake, the types of protein emphasized in the new food pyramid are not in line with nutrition research or even the USDA's own research report used to create the guidelines.

Recent nutrition research emphasizes plant protein source and limiting sources of saturated fat. Meanwhile, the new food pyramid places steak and cheese at the top of the pyramid.
