Optometrist vs. Optician vs. Ophthalmologist – What’s the difference?

We get these questions all the time, so let’s break it down:

Optometrist – Your primary eye care provider. They perform eye exams, check your vision, diagnose and manage many eye conditions, and prescribe glasses, contact lenses, and certain medications.

Optician – The eyewear experts! Opticians help you choose frames and lenses and make sure your glasses fit comfortably and correctly, based on your prescription.

Ophthalmologist – A medical doctor who specializes in eye disease, surgery, and advanced medical treatment, including procedures like cataract or laser surgery. In Alberta, patients need a referral from their optometrist in order to be seen by an ophthalmologist.

Introducing Dr. Galaal! ✨

Dr. Galaal attended the University of Alberta, completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences and Psychology. She completed her optometric training at the New England College of Optometry, where she gained extensive clinical experience through rotations at community health centers in Boston and an internship at the VA Manchester Medical Center, focusing on ocular disease. Dr. Galaal also spent time working at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, and in the specialty contact lens department at the New England College of Optometry Center for Eyecare.

After graduation, Dr. Galaal spent 4 years practicing in the Greater Boston Area before returning home to Alberta. She is passionate about helping patients achieve their best vision and specializes in Myopia management for children.

She is accepting new patients!
