🚨 Food recalls are rising—but they don’t have to be.

The most common causes:
âś” Microbial contamination
âś” Undeclared allergens
âś” Chemical residues
âś” Process failures

The solution? Smarter testing—not more testing.

PBR Laboratories delivers precise, compliance-driven analysis to help you prevent recalls before they happen.

How often should food processors test for pathogens?

It depends on the level of risk. Facilities handling ready-to-eat products or meat typically require more frequent testing to ensure safety.

Routine pathogen testing helps detect contamination early and supports compliance with food safety requirements.

For businesses in Alberta, consistent testing programs are essential for protecting products and consumers.

Food testing and quality testing are not the same — and understanding the difference matters.

Quality testing focuses on consistency, while food safety testing focuses on identifying risks like harmful bacteria and contamination.

Even a high-quality product can pose a risk if proper food safety testing isn’t in place.

For food processors in Alberta, combining both approaches helps ensure safe, compliant, and reliable products.

E. coli O157:H7 and other STEC pathogens remain one of the most serious food safety risks in beef processing.

Even small levels of contamination can lead to major recalls and health risks if not detected early. That’s why routine microbiological testing and environmental monitoring are essential in meat processing facilities.

Effective testing programs help identify contamination early, verify sanitation procedures, and support regulatory compliance.

For processors across Alberta and Canada, proactive testing plays a key role in protecting both product quality and consumer safety.

Listeria testing is a critical part of food safety for ready-to-eat products.

Because Listeria can grow even in cold storage, food processors must take extra precautions to detect and control it within their facilities. Regular testing and environmental monitoring help identify risks early and ensure sanitation programs are working effectively.

If you’re producing ready-to-eat foods, having a strong testing program in place is essential for protecting your products and your customers.

Environmental Swabbing Programs: A Key Part of Food Safety

Environmental monitoring programs are essential for preventing contamination in food processing facilities.

By routinely collecting swab samples from equipment, food contact surfaces, drains, and production areas, food processors can detect harmful microorganisms before they impact finished products.

Environmental swabbing helps identify pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella, while also verifying the effectiveness of sanitation programs.

Strong environmental monitoring programs support HACCP systems, preventive control plans, and regulatory compliance, helping processors maintain safe production environments and reduce the risk of food recalls.

Routine testing remains one of the most effective tools for protecting food safety and consumer health.

How do food companies determine the shelf life of their products?

Many manufacturers assume fewer tests mean lower costs when determining product shelf life.

In reality, limited testing points can lead to inaccurate expiry dates, product waste, or even costly recalls.

Shelf life testing helps producers understand how their products change over time by monitoring factors such as microbial growth, moisture, and product stability.

By adding more testing intervals, food producers can often gain better insight into product performance and sometimes even extend shelf life safely.

We recently published an article explaining how shelf life testing works, what affects testing costs, and why additional data points can benefit food manufacturers.

🇨🇦 Canada Front-of-Package Labelling – Enforcement Is Active

As of January 1, 2026, Health Canada’s mandatory “High in” front-of-package nutrition symbol is required on prepackaged foods that exceed thresholds for:

• Sodium
• Sugars
• Saturated Fat

We are now in February.

If your products are still on shelves without the required FOP symbol, you may be non-compliant with Canadian Food and Drug Regulations.

Food manufacturers, importers, and exporters to Canada — now is the time to review your labels and confirm compliance.

Regulatory enforcement is active.
