TW - Birth Announcement

Our sweet baby Jackson (aka Jack, Jax) was born June 16th at a whopping 9.8 lbs. We are all healthy, happy and so in love. We had THE best support from the nurses and physicians at the Alex, magic hands and pony tail making from from our amazing doula (I highly recommend using a doula if you are able as it was the perfect mix of medical, wisdom, and care).

During pregnancy, I was so lucky to be able to be supported by my team at for Pelvic Floor Physio from .the.physio birth prep, .holistics & for Acupuncture, for prenatal lactation consultant support, and and for massage too! I will be back for some postpartum care too.

Thank you everyone for all your support, care and wishes along the way!

And now off to bed early to attempt to recharge.

How do we incorporate values in therapy?

Valuing is the process used to help people create meaning in their lives. Valuing is evident when clients choose behaviours that are consistent with what they care about. Often this means turning toward desired life consequences, even though there are personal difficulties or obstacles.

The definition and function of values work with clients can become lost because the term ‘values’ is used so widely in Western society. Values have a behaviorally specific definition and function. Values can be defined simply as desired global qualities of ongoing action (Hayes, Bond, Barnes-Holmes, & Austin, 2006). Or more theoretically precise as:
“Values are freely chosen, verbally constructed consequences of ongoing, dynamic, evolving patterns of activity, which establish predominant reinforcers for that activity that are intrinsic in engagement in the valued behavioral pattern itself." (Wilson & DuFrene, 2009)”

Why all the fuss about simple questions?

Many people who seek help from a professional have spent a lot of time talking and thinking about their problems. Moreover, if they have seen a few professionals they will have become adept at telling and retelling their story. In fact, as they tell their story they will be walking a well-worn path, and each re-telling of their story strengthens that well- worn path even more.

The alternative path, one that leads to valued living, is rarely spoken of in everyday life.
For many people this makes values discussions new, scary, and even painful. What we value most can seem distant or impossible.

If you want to start exploring your life and how your values fit in, swipe right for some thought and conversation value prompts I love to use with myself and clients.

This week I dig out my summer shoes out. I received these shoes 12 years ago from my husband as a gift for my birthday our first year together. They are my favourite shoes because they were a symbol of his thoughtfulness, care and practicality! But after my walk, I sadly realized that I could feel the pavement and wet oozing up from the soles - and I know it was time to begrudgingly depart with my favourite shoes. I wondered why I was attached to them and then though about the symbolism and connection between shoes and relationships.

Most people prefer a brand new pair of shoes to an old one. Especially if the old pair are worn down because they have been worn day in and day out for the last 7 years without cleaning them.

I know you wouldn’t expect me to say this, but the same preference goes for relationships.

Most people in relationships want the same FEELING a new pair of shoes gives them, and when they have trouble getting that “new shoe feeling” out of their old relationships, they go get another one.

It starts by being too busy to take care of them. Then, you forget to clean them. After a while, they become so dirty that they get pushed aside and you get a new pair.

They go from being your “go-to” shoes to becoming the “once in a while” running shoes. And eventually, they turn into the pair that you use to do yard work (if you wear them at all).

But my relationship with my old shoes shifted in my relationship over the years, which eventually became my marriage. My mindset quickly changed to find comfort in my old pair of shoes you continue to wear because they fit so well. These shoes knew how to hold my feet and every year after winter ended, I always made time to take them out, connect to all the memories and feelings these shoes supported over the years, and thank them for another year to come.

Here is to hoping that my new shoes (which are a newer version of my old ones) will live up to the legacy of my old ones.

“In our life of shoes and people;
If they hurt you,
They are not of your size.”
