Myopia (defined as any eyeglass prescription greater than -0.50 D.S.) is at epidemic levels in Canada.
Currently 30-35% of Canadian children need glasses or contact lenses to see clearly in the distance and in the classroom. Not only is this a personal inconvenience, but it can also have serious vision consequences.
Even mild myopia or nearsightedness (-0.50D to -2.00D) increases a personal relative risk by 2X of developing a retinal detachment, cataracts or myopic macular degeneration. When a prescription increases past -5.00 D, the risk of retinal detachment is 9X higher; by -8.00D, it's 21X higher.
Thankfully though your optometrist as access to a number of treatments to manage myopia progression in kids. Although these treatments cannot reverse myopia, they can help slow the progression by as much as 59%, which can help reduce a child's relative risk of secondary eye disease.
In addition, they can help keep prescriptions within a range to which refractive eye surgery like LASIK or PRK may still be an option in the future.
If you want to know if your child is a candidate for myopia treatments, book an eye exam with one of our optometrists.

In general, eye doctors don't love permanent eyelash extensions and fills. The reason is that they allow bacteria to gather at the base of your natural lashes, which can lead to premature eyelash loss and thinner eyelashes over time. This bacteria can also cause your eyelid margins to look red and inflamed.
But if you must, you should also make sure that you're cleaning your eyelids before having them applied as well as between fills. Performing warm compresses with a BruderMask and using preservative-free hypoallergenic products like Blephaclean or a daily cleanser and makeup remover like I-LID 'N LASH is a great way to keep your natural eyelashes clean and healthy as well as prepare your lids and lashes for a fill.

If so, it might be time to talk to one of our optometrists about myopia control treatments such as MiSight 1-Day contact lenses. In clinical trials over a 3-year period, MiSight contact lenses were shown to reduce myopia (nearsighted) progression by 59%, versus a regular 1-day contact lens.

Let's talk eyelash/lid hygiene!
Did you know many of the issues involving your eye are a complication due to lack of dirty eyelids and lashes? One thing to keep in mind is that our eyelids have the thinnest skin on the body making them more vulnerable to a variety of conditions. Dry eye, Blepharitis, and styes can generally be avoided with proper eye hygiene.
Women who wear false eyelashes tend to be more susceptible as bacteria can collect under the eyelash glue or on the false eyelash itself which calls for direct contact to the eye. It's important to clean your lashes and eyelids after removing your fake eyelashes to ensure no bacteria build up. We recommend I-lid 'N Lash by for this step. Swipe right for tips on eye hygiene that you can apply every day!
