Have you ever heard of a fantasy coffin? In Ghana, people like to be buried in containers that represent their lives. It's believed that if the deceased is properly honored, such actions secure spiritual favor for the family left behind. Caskets have been shaped like planes for pilots, fish for fishermen and even a Mercedes-Benz for a businessman.

Dr. Alan Wolfelt, recognized as one of North America’s leading death educators and grief counselors, hears from journalists, colleagues, friends, family and others. Here he shares his thoughts on anger spurred by violence and how mourning can help drive change.

The Bo people, a community who lived in China's Sichuan and Yunnan regions, overlooking the longest river in Asia, were referred to "sons of the cliffs." The tribe vanished, but it left behind the Hanging Coffins of Asia. There is no confirmed explanation for these cliffside burials, but theorists believe they could have been a way for the bodies to be nearer to God or avoid being broken apart by wild animals.

What do you know about the hanging coffins of China and the mysterious Bo People? How did they make the hanging coffins, and how did they suspend them from the mountainside? And why the high burials?

Today, on Funeral Celebrant Day, we recognize and honour the compassionate individuals who help families find comfort, meaning, and healing during life’s most difficult moments.

Funeral celebrants guide families with grace, listen with open hearts, and create beautiful, personalized ceremonies that reflect the lives and stories of those we’ve loved and lost. Their work is often quiet and unseen, but its impact is profound.

To all the dedicated celebrants who stand beside families with empathy and strength — thank you. Your kindness matters more than you know. 💛

Special thank you to one of our Celebrants, Bonnie Marchand, who guides and gives comfort through meaningful service to our families. We appreciate you so much Bonnie!

Roman soldiers legally were not allowed to marry, so they legitimized their relationships in death by dedicating gravestones of their loved ones. This practice transferred to Britain while military forts were shared by the Romans and the British.
