Stenosing tenosynovitis, more commonly known as trigger finger, is an overuse condition frequently treated by hand therapists. Conservative treatment is generally successful, with few cases requiring corticosteroid injection or surgery. Treatment is quite simple with immobilization via splinting being the cornerstone of a successful outcome. If you'd like to learn more about it, head to the link in bio to read our trigger finger blog post.

About 45% of pregnant or post-partum women suffers from hand on wrist pain. De Quervain's tenosynovitis, commonly known as Mommy's thumb, is one of the most common conditions affecting this population and can quickly become debilitating as the need to care for a baby is constant.

The pain is due to inflammation of 2 tendons responsible for thumb movement which are located on the thumb side of the wrist (APL and EPB). They are active when the thumb is out, away from the hand, which is a movement repetitively done to hold a baby, breastfeed, bottle feed and more.

New moms are too often told that symptoms will go away as the baby gets older and caring and carrying needs decrease and to just "wait it out". There is however a lot that a hand therapist can do to help minimize symptoms. From ergonomics, activity modification, splinting and targeted exercises, a hand therapist can develop a realistic and effective treatment plan to allow you to care for your baby with the least possible amount of discomfort.

Often overlooked, proprioception training is a crucial part of wrist rehabilitation. A misalignment between the feedback from mechanoreceptors in the wrist and visual or tactile feedback can even lead to chronic pain. Proprioception exercises can be as simple as throwing and catching a ball or as advanced balancing a slosh pipe, depending on your level of impairment.

Ski season is in full swing in Alberta which also means skier's thumb season. Skier's thumb refers to a ligament injury (ulnar collateral ligament) after falling on your hand with your thumb splayed open, especially if holding a ski pole. It does require a period of immobilization to heal.

However, an injury doesn't necessarily need to keep you off the slopes. Reach's therapists can customize the mold of your splint to allow you to stay active and involved in your meaningful activities. This, of course, depends on the severity of your injury but it's worth talking to your therapist about splinting options and your goals.

Blood flow restriction treatment has gained popularity in physio clinics over the last few years. It is a powerful tool that allows therapists to carefully develop a program to help clients stay active, maintain muscle mass and healthy joints while allowing the injured structures to heal. Light load has also shown to promote tissue healing when done in a controlled way.

Examples of injuries we commonly use BFR with include fractures, pulley injuries, TFCC injuries and ligament injuries.

BFR is a game changer in active rehab keeping you at your maximal potential throughout your rehab.

The start of a new year is commonly a time for many individuals to set new fitness goals. Motivation is high, gyms are full and the desire to go hard right from the beginning is felt by many. This can quickly turn sour and lead to injuries. Here are a few advice from our sports physiotherapists to help you reach your 2026 fitness goals.

1. Set short and long term goals and be realistic. If you haven’t worked out in a long time or are taking on a new activity, don’t expect to perform at an advanced level right away. Set your long term goal first and then break it up in small, more achievable steps. If you need guidance on how to best achieve your goals, our team is here to help!
2. In any sport or physical activity, it is crucial to understand and master the basics first. Whether that’s learning proper running mechanics or knowing how to bench press safely, a good foundation will support you in achieving your goals.
3. Your body has protective mechanism made to send your warnings when something is off. Aches, twinges and pain are all signals from your body that something is wrong. Do not brush it off. If you feel the same aches and pain on a few occasions and while doing the same movement or activity, we highly recommend that you seek out some help before it develops into an injury. The sooner you address aches and pains, the sooner you get back on the path to your goals.
4. Fitness goals should remain enjoyable. Your goals are for yourself and no one else. Choose an activity that brings you joy and check in with yourself once in a while to see if you’re still doing it because you enjoy it or just to check an item off your to do list. Goals can be adjusted throughout the year based on what you like to do and how your life evolves throughout the year.
