Headed Somewhere Tropical? You Might Still Need Malaria Protection.
Malaria risk isn’t always where you think. Many popular travel spots — parts of Africa, Asia, Central America, even the Caribbean — still have malaria risk, including parts of Mexico, and parts of the Dominican Republic. Even luxury resorts or popular tourist areas can be in malaria zones.
Here’s why it matters:
Malaria is caused by a parasite spread through mosquito bites.
Without prevention, it can lead to high fever, chills, fatigue, and serious complications — and it can strike weeks after you return home.
The good news? It’s preventable with the right antimalarial prophylaxis (medication) and mosquito precautions:
✅ Take prescribed malaria medication before, during & after travel
✅ Use insect repellent with DEET or picaridin
✅ Sleep under mosquito nets in higher-risk areas
✅ Wear light-colored, long-sleeve clothing
Every destination — and traveler — is different. Your travel health consult helps tailor the right plan for you, so you can explore confidently and safely.
