The Mucous Plug: One of Pregnancy’s most fascinating little guardians If you're pregnant, you’ve likely heard about the mucous plug. This tiny powerhouse deserves more credit! It is pretty cool.

Here are a few interesting things to know:

1️⃣ It’s your body’s natural security system
The mucous plug forms early in pregnancy and acts like a protective seal inside your cervix. Its job? Keeping bacteria out and creating a safe environment for your growing baby. Think of it as your body’s built-in, 24/7 bouncer.

2️⃣ It can regenerate (yes, really!)
Losing a bit? No stress. The mucous plug can rebuild itself throughout pregnancy. Your body is constantly renewing cervical mucus, so small discharges don’t necessarily mean labour is close.

3️⃣ Losing it doesn’t always mean labour is imminent
Some people lose their mucous plug days or even weeks before labour begins. It can be one big glob, stringy, or more like increased discharge. Colour can vary from a clear, white, yellowish, or streaked with blood (often called the bloody show).

4️⃣ It’s different from amniotic fluid
Many people wonder if they’re “losing their water.” The mucous plug is typically thick, sticky, and jelly-like, while amniotic fluid is watery and continuous. When in doubt, reach out to your care provider and try the "towel test" to get a good look.

5️⃣ It’s a sign that your cervix is softening and changing
Seeing your mucous plug can simply mean your body is gearing up. It is a normal, healthy part of the process as your cervix ripens. Trust the process.

Pregnancy is full of mysteries, and this little plug is one of the coolest ones. Your body knows exactly what it’s doing. Comment below if you want to know more about the towel test, we mentioned.

Many clients come to us with concerns of having their voices be heard, making informed decisions, early labour support and help for partners before ever coming to the hospital. Many have never done this before or want a totally different experience this time around. Having doula care may be one way to have the guidance and knowledge by your side, every step of the way.

Comment below some of your concerns or questions you have as you prepare for your birthing experience.

Knowledge isn’t just power, it’s protection. When we replace myths with evidence and confidence, we create space for birth to be a deeply embodied, supported experience.

What’s a “trick” you were told about birth or postpartum that turned out to be a myth?

A typical movie birth scenes, you’ve likely seen on TV. The person in labour holding their breath, chin to chest, face turning red or purple as they push with all their might.
This technique, called “purple pushing” (or directed pushing), became common in the 1950s when birth practices moved from home to hospital. It involves holding your breath and pushing for 10 seconds with each contraction, often at the direction of care providers.
But here’s what we now know through modern research 👇
Evidence suggests that spontaneous (or instinctive) pushing, following your body’s urge to push, breathing naturally, and change positions as needed,
is associated with:
Shorter second stage of labor
Less fatigue and oxygen depletion for both baby and birthing person
Lower risk of pelvic floor trauma and perineal injury
Improved oxygenation for the baby

A Cochrane Review (2017) found that those who used spontaneous pushing experienced fewer interventions and better satisfaction with their birth experience.
Trust that instinct, focus grunting, sighing, exhaling, and moving with the rhythm of your contractions, bearing down allows the uterus and baby to work together naturally.

As doulas, we help parents understand their options and tune into their body’s cues rather than relying solely on directed commands. Birth is most powerful when it’s embodied fully in what feels and is working best for you.

Have you ever heard about the groaning cake?

It is a popular one we make for blessing ways that we attend to celebrate the birthing parent. It is one of our favourites. It is said that in many old traditions, when a baby was born, a “groaning cake” was baked and shared to celebrate the birthing person’s strength and the arrival of new life. The name comes from the “groans” of labour and the cake was believed to offer nourishment, comfort, and even protection in those sacred postpartum hours.

Author Ami McKay, in The "Birth House", revived this beautiful ritual and her recipe has become a symbol of honouring birth as a deeply human, communal experience.

The Groaning Cake Recipe (from Ami McKay)
½ cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 cup molasses
1 cup buttermilk
3 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tbsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp allspice
½ tsp salt
1 cup raisins or currants
Cream butter and sugar, then beat in eggs and molasses. Mix dry ingredients separately and slowly combine, alternating with buttermilk. Add raisins, pour into a greased loaf pan, and bake at 350°F for about 45–50 minutes.

The cake was often baked as labour began, filling the home with a warm, grounding scent, it was believed to ease birth pains and protect the baby’s spirit.

Others left a slice out for the midwife and birth workers an offering of gratitude and respect.Eating the cake together symbolized community care, a way of “breaking bread” to welcome a new soul earthside.

P.S. We like to add a caramel icing to the top to add a bit of sweetness to this bread type cake.

Comment below if you have had it and what your thoughts are on it is it a thumbs up or down?👍👎

September brought cooler air, golden leaves and precious new arrivals!

Though our team took on a reduced client load this month, we were still busy teaching, supporting families in workshops, and preparing for the seasons ahead.

To all the babies born this month , you came into the world under the signs of Virgo ♍️ (August 23 – September 22) and Libra ♎️ (September 23 – October 22).
Virgo babies are often said to carry a grounded, thoughtful energy. They may grow into detail-oriented, caring souls who notice the little things and love bringing order to the world.
Libra babies arrive with balance and harmony in their stars. They are often associated with kindness, a natural love for connection, and a gentle spirit that seeks beauty and fairness.
No matter the sign, every September baby we’ve welcomed is unique, deeply loved, and a reminder of the wonder of new beginnings. Welcome to the world, little ones
