What does a postpartum doula actually do… We get asked this a lot.
A postpartum doula is there to support you as you recover, adjust, and find your rhythm with your baby, not to take over, but to walk alongside you in a way that feels calm, and truly helpful.
So what does that actually look like during a visit? When your doula arrives, you can expect a gentle check-in, how are you feeling, physically and emotionally? What kind of support would feel most helpful today? Have you eaten, do you need a nap or some self care time?
From there, care is guided by your needs. It might look like:
Sitting together and debriefing your birth or how the last few days have been
Hands-on support with baby care and feeding, soothing, diapering, learning cues
Holding your baby so you can shower, rest, or simply have a moment to yourself
Light meal prep, snacks, tea, and helping keep your space feeling manageable
Folding baby laundry, tidying up, and easing the mental load of “little things”
Offering evidence-based guidance and reassurance when questions come up
There’s no pressure to host, entertain, or “have it together.” You can be in your bath robe, ( we actually encourage that) on the couch, feeding your baby, we meet you exactly where you are. No judgement, just care. Each visit is typically a few hours long and flows with your day. Some families use the time to rest, some to learn, some just to feel less alone. It’s care that is steady, nurturing, and centered around you.
We have a team of postpartum doulas ready to help you in your transition and adjustment. Book ahead to ensure you get a spot in our calendar secured.
