Habitual self care is about meeting yourself where you’re at, and implementing practices that are accessible, applicable, and enjoyable, so that they can grow into lifelong (albeit evolving) habits.

Like with movement and food, these practices should not consume your thoughts, time, and energy. They should complement your life, nourish you in some way, and challenge you to grow in ways that feel safe, even if they are uncomfortable.

As you read this, take a moment to reflect… what is one small self care practice you could start to gently build into your life right now?

A quick reminder for anyone who needs to hear this today...

You don’t always need to have a fitness goal. You can care for yourself, develop a regular fitness routine, and reap the benefits of doing so without making it about what you achieve.

Somatics can help reduce anxiety around exercise by helping you feel more grounded and present in your body while releasing energy and emotion that can make exercise feel uncomfortable.

Here are 3 simple somatic exercises you can include in your warm-up:

🏃‍♀️ Walking — A great overall warm-up that helps get your blood flowing and your body warm, while the repetitive, alternating movement helps you feel more grounded.

🧘‍♀️ Dynamic Neck Stretches — These not only help warm up the neck and shoulders, but can also help us feel calm and release emotional tension.

👟  Heal slams — A great warm-up for your ankles that can also help you release anxiety and expel nervous energy.

Simple practices like these ask us to tune in to the sensations and subtle cues that show up in our bodies, fostering a deeper connection with ourselves. This connection helps us create space to feel and process our emotions, and to be more present and intentional with our responses and actions.

Almost one year later, my experience at Wild Roses has stayed with me.

It is just one reason why it feels so meaningful to be invited back this year to lead Release: A Somatic Mobility Session. This session will be a space to release physical and emotional tension, reconnect with your body, and move in a way that feels freeing, supportive, and maybe even a little playful.

If you’ve been considering going this summer, consider this your sign to join me there!

Everyone experiences food differently because we all have different needs, preferences, tolerances, access, and lived experiences that impact how we see and interact with food, and how different foods serve each of us.

Recognizing and acknowledging how food serves me helps me see food in a more appreciative light and allows me to make food choices with intention, and self-compassion.

If you’re working toward this kind of relationship with food, you don’t have to do it alone. There’s a whole community of people exploring this alongside you.

Our Self Care Community is a space to connect, learn, and feel supported as you build these beliefs in a way that works for you. 🧡

There is no shame in modifying an exercise. In fact, in many cases, using modifications is the key to maximizing improvements in strength and mobility.

So, how do you know if you should modify?

1️⃣ You can’t complete the suggested reps with proper form and technique.

2️⃣ You are experiencing pain, injury, or movement impairment.

3️⃣ You are experiencing low energy or above normal fatigue.

Pay attention to these signs that it’s time to modify, and follow here, or shoot me a DM if you have questions about making movement work for you.

A lot of people can tell you what you should be doing when it comes to exercise.

But figuring out how to actually get there, in a way that feels safe, sustainable, and supportive, is a completely different story.

These are a few takeaways from this month’s blog post, written by my practicum student Jill, who brings such a thoughtful and real perspective to movement and exercise.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by fitness advice or unsure where to start, this one is worth the read.

You can check out the full blog post on the website, or send me a DM if you’re curious about working with Jill.

Listening to your body and responding with compassion takes practice and intention, but it can transform the way you feel about exercise and your body.

Ultimately, movement should feel good, not like a chore or a punishment.

This shouldn’t be controversial, but...

The people you trust with your health and wellness should make you feel supported, not shameful.

And yet… shame-based tactics are still being used to “motivate” change. And this approach isn’t just ineffective long term, it’s harmful.

Food shaming, restrictive eating practices, or exercising to compensate for food can cause or exacerbate disordered eating and can actually lead to worse health outcomes.

While it can be a difficult process to unpack your own internalized food shame, you deserve to feel like it is safe to be honest with your coach, trainer, or other health care practitioner.

If fear or shame are coming up regularly in your relationship with them, consider speaking with them if it feels safe to do so…and if it doesn’t… I think you know what to do.

If you’re working on your relationship with food, holidays like Easter can bring up a lot.

Extra food, family conversations about diets, or the feeling that you need to “balance out” treats with restriction or exercise.

But here’s your reminder: you don’t need to change the way you eat or move your body this week because of Easter. When we allow ourselves to enjoy holiday foods without guilt and then simply continue on with our normal routines, holidays become a lot less stressful.

Whether you’re celebrating this weekend or not, these reminders can help you approach food more mindfully and with a little more ease.

It is safe for you to eat and enjoy food today. And every day.
