Thanks to the generosity of our community, staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital are now using a new portable X-ray machine right at the bedside — improving comfort, efficiency, and patient care when it matters most.

This vital piece of equipment was made possible through Foundation support, with special thanks to Stacey Wempe and family for their generous donation. Your kindness is helping our healthcare teams deliver faster, safer, and more compassionate care close to home.

This is Kara, a CCA in Unit A at our hospital.

💙 How many years have you worked at STJH?
I have worked at St. Joseph's Hospital for 9 years. Starting out as an environmental service worker then being able to further my education to become a CCA.

💙 What made you choose a career in healthcare?
I had a few other jobs before I started my career in healthcare but none of them were as rewarding. Growing up I always enjoyed helping and taking care of others. So it only made sense to further my education after working as a housekeeper to become a continuing care assistant. I enjoy being able to help people with their physical and emotional needs. Its definitely not always easy, but I love my job and my coworkers.

"I’ve been at St. Joe's for 1 year now." - Jill

💙 What made you choose a career in diagnostic imaging?
"I was drawn to diagnostic imaging as a career because it is a mix of patient care and technical work. It feels meaningful and it’s a career where I am always learning. I also like that it doesn’t lock me into one lane. As an MRT, you start in X-ray, then can move into things like MRI or CT. I’ve moved into CT while working at St Joseph’s, but I like knowing that the career can always grow with me. I have options if I ever want to switch things up!" - Jill

We are proud to hire local contractors for our MRI project as we work towards opening up this new service in 2026! Turnbull Excavating is proud to be a part of bringing this vital service to our community.

"We are thrilled that we are able to be a part of a project that our community came together to bring to life. Having the MRI service in our town will be a great addition as over the years we have all known someone who has been forced to deal with long wait times and lots of travelling. Our hospital provides care for not only Estevan, but several surrounding communities that this will also benefit. This is a welcomed addition to our hospital."
