Sept. 30 is Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Today, we remember and honour the lives and communities impacted by the residential school system in Canada.

Wearing orange is a way to show our support for Survivors and their families and acknowledge the tragic and painful history of residential schools.

Understanding our history and its continued impact is essential to reconciliation. To learn more as well as explore the rich and diverse cultures, voices, and experiences of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, visit the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation website: www.nctr.ca .

This Sunday is -- which is observed every Oct. 16 by health care professionals and public organizations concerned with spine care throughout the world.

It recognizes the importance of spine health, as well as the lack of access to quality spine care and rehabilitation in under-served communities, which can make low back pain become more than an inconvenience. Back pain is also one of the primary causes of emergency room visits and one of the leading causes of initial opioid prescriptions. Unchecked, lack of care can result in long-lasting damage and chronic pain, inhibiting your ability to work, care for your family and enjoy life.

The June 2019 report by the Canadian Pain Task Force notes, “The burden of chronic pain is not shared equally among Canadians. It is more common among older adults, females, Indigenous Peoples, Veterans, and populations affected by social inequities and discrimination…These social determinants can lead to a complex interplay between chronic pain, mental illness, and substance use disorders. Combined with the stigma that accompanies these health issues, this places many at high risk for unmanaged pain.”
