We see a lot of PCOS patients at our clinic... And it can be stressful to receive this diagnosis. There are symptoms associated with it that are frustrating and disheartening like: fatigue, weight gain, acne, hair loss, irregular periods, and fertility struggles.
But, there is an interesting connection between PCOS and elite/Olympic female athletes.
Research indicates that Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) and related hyperandrogenic traits are more prevalent in elite female athletes and Olympians compared to the general female population. Studies found that nearly 40% of female Olympians may have PCOS, a rate four times higher than in the general population.
PCOS is associated with mild hyperandrogenism (elevated androgen/testosterone levels) and often includes a more anabolic body composition, with higher muscle mass and increased bone mineral density. This leads to a performance advantage!
The elevated testosterone associated with PCOS can increase explosive power and strength, which provides a competitive edge in sports.
The management of PCOS is surprisingly simple. Diet and lifestyle changes are needed, as well as some supplemental supports. But with these protocols in place the symptoms associated with this condition can be controlled.
Sports that PCOS seems to be overrepresented in, and beneficial to, include:
- combat sports
- weightlifting
- endurance sports
- field hockey
- soccer
- basketball
- softball
So if you feel down about a PCOS diagnosis, remember that there are ways to harness it to make it work for you!
If you feel like you need support with your PCOS, Dr. Sam and Dr. Victoria both frequently work with this population.
