Does massage therapy “work” ? - A Massage Assessment by Paul Ingraham:

"Do we underestimate the value of massage as a form of psychotherapy? (Perhaps while overestimating its power to tenderize muscle and defeat pain?)
Recently I got a brief chair massage, after a long interval without massage. Such relief! After 15 years of study, I still don’t understand why that is such an INTENSE sensory experience — only that it is, and that it matters.
Any massage therapist who has been working for more than a month has observed the curious way that touch provokes introspection, insight, and inspiration. The revelations of contact (“I had no idea I felt this way!”) transmogrify into revelations with broader significance. Intense and/or novel sensations can be a catalyst for personal growth. Above all, massage reminds us what it is like to feel good, and we often desperately NEED that reminder. We may then feel highly motivated to reclaim that sense of well-being in the rest of their lives.

Note this important fact: Pain is the last symptom to appear and the first symptom to disappear! This means that when you have something going on in your body, by the time you feel pain - it has been there for a while. This also means that if you are treating this issue, say with massage, DO NOT stop just because the pain went away. Go for a few more treatnents to ensure the issue is resolved.
