This year, one of my personal hopes is to read more fiction. I have always loved reading as a way to explore new perspectives, and I want to spend more time doing that. I started my 2023 reading list with this recommendation from one of my amazing little clients. It’s a YA novel called “Fish in a Tree” by Lynda Mullaly Hunt.

This is a story about finding a new story. It’s about a kiddo who has so far believed the story that’s been told to her - that she must be stupid because she can’t read.

Through the help of a supportive teacher, Ally discovers a new, true story that works so much better for her. She is not dumb at all. She actually has dyslexia, which is means that her brain needs to take a different path for learning letters. A different path that leads to the same destination - learning ideas and sharing her own with the world!

Through the story, reading changes from something that was once in Ally’s Sketchbook of Impossible Things, to something that is indeed possible.

My favourite part of the story is when there is an accidental rupture in Ally’s relationship and trust with her teacher, and how through communication and openness, they are able to repair that rupture. We need stories like this to normalize and model healthy rupture and repair. It happens all the time in therapy, and it’s such a vital part of human connection and relationships.

A special thank you to my little client who shared about this book with me! 💗

It’s tradition now to take a selfie with my tiny color monster Christmas tree after I finish my last session of the year. Here’s a tired smile as I sign off for 2022, feeling grateful for all that my clients have shared and taught me. ❤️

Wishing you love and light this holiday season! 🎄✨

Hi friends! I’m so excited to share with you about this upcoming event that I am honoured to collaborate on.

Next Wednesday November 30, I will be joining a round table discussion at the University of Guelph on health and the arts/ humanities in Canada’s healthcare system. I am so excited to share ideas and learn from my fellow panelists, including art therapist Nicole Fantin, music therapist Mary Meads, drama therapist Cassandra Brennan, community arts program director Michelle Peek, and historian Catherine Carstairs. We will be talking about the intersection of art and health, and ideas for future research and collaboration.

This is your official invitation to join us! You can attend in person if you’re local, or register to join virtually by emailing kfranc02@uoguelph.ca

There is no cost to attend and we hope to see you there!

I made this little plasticine bunny this week, and I really love it.

I was trying to think of something profound to write for a caption, so that I could justify sharing this photo with you. But you know what? Sometimes the magic of art therapy is in its simplicity. The work is in the process.

I made this, and I love it. When we make something and just automatically feel affection and care towards the object we created, we get to practice self love in a concrete and tangible way. We get to effectively love a part of our inner world that now exists outside of us. And if we want to, we can share it with others.

When kids make art that they love, it’s so special. I feel honoured to witness the process, and to celebrate their expressions of self love. Thank you for witnessing mine!💗

🧡 Every child matters. Today and every day. 🧡

I’m so grateful for the opportunity to support and learn from Indigenous artists and teachers. My orange shirt is from , an urbanized native clothing brand based in Tkaronto, Turtle Island. I really love the description of the design from their website, so I wanted to share it with you:

“This powerful design, titled BINESI (created by Mitch Gegwetch; partly inspired by the work/style of Métis artist Ayla Bouvette and hand drawn in a modern contemporary woodland art style), symbolizes peace and resilience. It depicts three children, who were once lost but are now found, surrounded by a flyer spirit (Binesi) who is tasked with guidance and protection while on their journey to the spirit world.”

I love this image. As someone who works with children, I aim to constantly consider my position of power, and to be so mindful of how I navigate that position. Orange Shirt Day reminds us that power was abused in so many ways through the Residential School System. In contrast, within this image, the flyer spirit surrounds three precious children with power, protection, and guidance. 🖤

Today I wear my orange shirt to stand in solidarity and support, remembering and acknowledging the truth of the past, while celebrating the vitality of the present and holding hope for the future.

As I wake up on this last official day of summer, I notice those mixed feelings that often accompany transitions.

My morning coffee is a grounding ritual for me - it’s something consistent no matter the season of nature or life. ☕️💕

In the summer, I LOVE when I have the opportunity to enjoy my morning coffee on the beach. It’s a sensory experience that I imagine and look forward to all winter and spring.

I feel sad that morning coffee on the beach is finished for 2022, and it’s okay to notice and honour that feeling.

This morning I’m drinking my morning coffee inside, with a sweatshirt on, and my cat is snuggled on my lap. It reminds me that I also love crisp mornings, cozy blankets, and glimpses of the first changing colours on the leaves outside my window. I am excited for the colours, smells, and sensations of fall too.

The equinox is about balance, and it’s a reminder that we can hold both. We can feel sadness and excitement, grief and joy, uncertainty and hope.

And if change feels hard, we can look for the little things (like morning coffee!) that stay the same.

Anxiety has a way of pulling us out of the present moment. It takes us back to ruminate over things that have already happened, or jumps us ahead to what might be coming next.❗️🔙💭🔜⚠️

We can playfully challenge anxiety when we find ways to stay connected to the present moment. Yesterday I tried this during my walk on my lunch break - I said to myself that for 20 minutes I was going to try to just focus my attention on the path ahead, and keep my eyes open for whatever I might find. 👀 And look at the treasures that nature had in store for me! Four beautiful feathers that I found at the beginning, middle, and end of my walk. 🙏🪶🥾

Last week I gave myself permission to peace out. I set my out of office reply, I turned off my message notifications, and I logged off all of my devices. I sat outside and read FICTION. I sat outside and did NOTHING. I wasn’t creative. I wasn’t productive. I wasn’t even that adventurous. It was glorious and restorative. And that was exactly what I needed.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the importance of giving ourselves permission to take space sometimes. To turn off and be temporarily unavailable. And how setting these boundaries can be so loving to ourselves, and to those we care about.

So if you (like me) appreciate being given permission, here it is: you have permission to peace out from time to time too. ✌️

“A Way With Wild Things” celebrates a little girl who loves nature (especially bugs!), but prefers to watch from the sidelines in social situations.

At a big family party, Poppy’s uncle comments that she is a wallflower, but her Grandmother suggests that Poppy is actually a wildflower. Poppy likes this identity, and feels affirmed and validated by her grandmother’s physical and metaphorical embrace.

As a child I was also labelled “quiet” and “shy,” and these labels never felt like a compliment. I like how this story offers a positive reframe from wallflower to wildflower. I love too how this book shares Poppy’s physical sensations when she does suddenly find herself at the centre of attention. She feels scared down to her toes! This might be hard to imagine for an extroverted person, but it’s very real for us introverts! Finally, the story shows how Poppy’s characteristics and qualities help her to do what she loves - the bugs come visit her because she is quiet, observant and patient. 🐛🦋🐜🪲🕸🐞

In a culture that has long held extroversion as the standard or expectation for social interaction, we need to affirm and celebrate introverted kids every chance we get. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being introverted - and the world needs the special magic that introverts bring to it! ❤️
